US, UK and EU call for immediate ceasefire along Israel's border with Lebanon [1]

The US along with a group of 11 of its allies spanning Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific have called for an immediate 21-day pause of cross border attacks between Israel and Lebanon, so the region can de-escalate the current tensions to allow diplomats some time to reach a ceasefire in Gaza and a diplomatic solution to the expanding conflict along the Israel-Lebanon border.

The 12-strong bloc proposed an immediate 21-day pause in fighting "to provide space for diplomacy towards the conclusion of a diplomatic settlement" and a ceasefire in Gaza.

In a joint statement, they said the hostilities were "intolerable" and presented an "unacceptable risk of a broader regional escalation" that was neither in the interest of the people of Israel or Lebanon

The joint statement was signed by the US, Australia, Canada, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and Qatar.

It followed a meeting of world leaders at the UN General Assembly in New York.

They said: "It is time to conclude a diplomatic settlement that enables civilians on both sides of the border to return to their homes in safety.

"Diplomacy however cannot succeed amid an escalation of this conflict."
