I can do a better job [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-09-16 The Mayor of Century, Gomez Lewis, was shocked to see that 15 million of a 30-million-dollar state grant was terminated. 12.8 million of those dollars was for hurricane shelters, a community center and bridges. One of the bridges is Freedom Bridge, a bridge that connects an apartment complex to the town of Century. Most of the residents of the complex are elderly people and the fire department and EMS say that it adds an extra 15 minutes to their travel time to save lives when 911 is called. This bridge has been out for over 4 years. We can only wonder if it's because, of the many people who reside there in poverty, 98% of them are African American people. The community of Century is in need of a hurricane shelter for the people because most of the houses are old and barely standing. This town is very poor, and their houses will not withstand another hurricane, they need shelter. Representative Salzman (FL HD-1) is aware of the obstacles that Century is facing, and she admitted that she was the person that was responsible for the state taking the grants away from Century. She was more concerned about the mayor hiring a consultant to help him run the town since he had no idea on how to handle this grant money. Salzman was upset that the consultant made more money than her. Gomez knew that before he became mayor a lot was wrong with the audits and money was mishandled. He wanted to do things right by getting help because, and I quote, Mayor Gomez said "I have no idea how to be the Mayor, I need help". The former mayor resigned after being questioned about the handling of funds that were given to the town. As we all know, the former mayor was a Republican and friends with Salzman. She never had a problem with these state grants until Gomez became the mayor. Salzman has had some unpleasant conversations with Gomez about the town of Century. But Salzman is not thinking about the people of Century that are suffering. They just had a water outage for three days that had to do with a main pipeline bursting. This was one of the projects that the 30-million-dollar grant was for, the water line. Salzman has had 4 years to reconstruct the town of Century with this grant money, but the people of Century have not seen anything change. No economic growth, no housing, no change. If Salzman did not like how things were going, why did she not come down and help the mayor get these projects moving? Instead, she took funds away from one of the most poverty-stricken towns in her District. A majority Black town.
