Now, I am running for Congress [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-09-15 Last month, I was a broke university graduate student researching climate science. Now, I am a broke congressional candidate trying to implement the same climate science. As they say, out of the frying pan… My name is Rock Aboujaoude, Jr., and I’m running for Congress in Florida. I grew up here. Actually, I grew up on a farm. My dad was an immigrant from Lebanon, and was keen on instilling the value of hard work, character, and the importance of serving the country which gave him an opportunity. As an Eagle Scout, community service has always been a cornerstone of my life, and I’m now driven to serve my community in a new way—by confronting the climate crisis head-on. My campaign is all about climate action because I believe that every major issue we face—from reproductive freedom to agriculture to healthcare—can and should be addressed through the lens of climate. This isn’t to say I don’t believe those issues matter (they do), but unless we address the climate elephant in the room, every issue we care about as Democrats will become far more difficult to solve, if not impossible. In 2020, as a recent Bachelor’s graduate, I pushed for a Florida Green New Deal. Now. I’m advocating for the same Florida Green New Deal that emphasizes the rights to Life, Liberty, Property, and Future by demanding bold and immediate climate action. Growing up on a farm, I’ve seen firsthand how climate change is already affecting agriculture and our communities. I know we need leaders who are ready to confront these issues with the urgency they deserve. My campaign has already rallied support from over 50 candidates across the Florida House, Senate, and Congress, uniting behind the shared goal of a carbon-neutral Florida by 2050 (and even exploring carbon negative technology to get us there even sooner). While I understand that my campaign might not win, my mission is to bring awareness, present the facts, and ensure that climate change is at the forefront of our policy discussions. This is about more than just an election; it’s about making sure Florida is prepared for the future. I’m committed to leading the fight on climate change because our future depends on it. Together, we can make a real difference by taking bold steps today to secure a better tomorrow.
