Trump's Other Big Lie [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-09-13 If you've paid any attention to Trump recently you may have heard him say things like: “the American dream is dead,...we are a failing nation,... we are quickly becoming a third world country, … our cities are hell holes, etc.” He is fond of casting himself as the best president ever, and, at the same time, saying that Joe Biden is the worst president in history. His viewpoint is purposefully black and white: under his administration everything was perfect - he had succeeded in “making America great again,” under President Biden, however, we are the worst we’ve ever been, and living in a country that is currently “going to hell” Is this true? Of course not. As a matter of fact the country was doing quite well when he took office: the “American carnage" as he claimed was the state of our country during his inaugural address, was only a figment of his fevered imagination. If anything, however, the shape he left the country in could certainly qualify as such. We were in the midst of a worldwide pandemic which, of course, he did not cause, but he was responsible for our nation’s response. A response resulting in one of the worst death rates of any country in the world: contributing to 1.5 million deaths (a number twice as large as the total deaths suffered in this country during the 1918-20 Spanish flu epidemic). Unemployment was at its highest level since the great depression, businesses were being shuttered, our healthcare system was stretched to the brink. Our cities were being wracked by riots - Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, Kenosha, etc. I could go on. This was all happening under his watch. And, finally, our nation's capital was attacked, invaded, looted, desecrated by a literal mob that he brought together and encouraged to do so while he sat and did nothing - betraying his oath of office, and betraying the nation itself. As a matter of fact, I can truthfully say that there has never been “American carnage” on that scale in my lifetime. This was less than four years ago - so I would hope this is still vivid in all of our memories. If there, indeed, was “American Carnage” - that did not exist when he took office - it certainly existed when he left. This big lie is the one that he hopes will imprint in all of those who hear it by its mere incessant repetition in spite of all facts to the contrary, and reality telling all of us the exact opposite. His fantasy world is that: under him the country was a peaceful paradise and under the Democratic administration the country has become an unlivable hell hole - a third world, failing nation poised on the precipice of WW III. He will repeat this obvious lie again and again and again in his rallies and appearances from now until the election - hoping, I suppose, to erase our memories: to make us doubt our experience of reality, and to wear down our resolve to resist. It will be an historic trick if he can pull it off, and it is up to each and every one of us daily to refute his version of what the county is and what it stands for, and to defeat his unfounded, unpatriotic hate-filled rhetoric at every turn, and especially when we go to the ballot box this November 5th.
