The Idiot, the Schemer, and the End of Human Rights [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-09-13 Consider this from the debate: LINSEY DAVIS: But if I could just get a yes or no. Because your running mate JD Vance has said that you would veto [a national abortion ban] if it did come to your desk. FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: Well, I didn't discuss it with JD In all fairness. JD -- And I don't mind if he has a certain view but I think he was speaking for me but I really didn't. So, Trump never discussed one of the most critical issues in the election with JD Vance. Consider this from the debate: FORMER PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: I have nothing to do, as you know and as she knows better than anyone, I have nothing to do with Project 2025. This Project, the brainchild of Kevin Roberts, President of the Heritage Foundation, is seen by many as an authoritarian, even Christian Nationalist plan to turn the United States into an autocracy. Not only has Vance praised the plan, he said that Roberts turned the Heritage Foundation “into the de facto institutional home of Trumpism.” If you don’t recognize Roberts’ name, he’s the extremist who declared, “We are in the process of the second American Revolution, which will remain bloodless if the left allows it to be.” Trump and Vance apparently do not know each other’s views on critical issues. Trump vetted Vance using the same kind of amateur-hour thinking that he used in his debate with Harris. In fact, it’s unlikely Trump even did an internet search. If he had, he would have found that Vance called him America’s Hitler, a “moral disaster,” and “reprehensible.” When Trump was asked why he picked JD Vance, he said, “He likes me maybe more than anybody else has liked me, and he sticks up for me.” Just as Harris said of autocrats in the debate, “they can manipulate you [Trump] with flattery”; that’s what Vance did. Imagine how gushing the sycophancy by Vance had to be for Trump to choose him without getting his views on major national questions or discovering the degree of contempt Vance held. Trump, who appears to be in cognitive decline, selected a running mate without knowing his views on critical issues, even at this late date. A vote for Trump, bad as it is, could well be a vote for something worse, should the 78-year-old get elected and become incapacitated or die. Given the extremist views of J.D. Vance and his cabal, whose to say that Vance won’t use the 25th Amendment to force Trump out of office? After all, Vance wanted that Amendment applied to Biden. The Republicans have chosen a idiot and a scheming extremist to represent them. Combine that with a puppet Supreme Court and a spineless Republican Congress, and you get the end of human rights and a few nails in the coffin of western civilization.
