The Great Debate [1]

Harris has no control over how Trump handles the debate, but we do know that when he talks policy he is monotone, awkward, and boring, and when on the attack, he’s energetic, emotional, and expressive, and more than likely to say things that are false, nonsensical, or crass. He really is not capable of being a statesperson or presidential. The problem for Trump is that he’s a rerun, an already a known entity, and it’s very unlikely he’ll convince people that he’s anyone other than the person we handily defeated in the Electoral College in 2020.

I read in a recent poll that 95% of people already know enough about Trump to form an opinion, but only 70% feel that way about Harris. To me that means that if she does a good job in this debate, it’s likely she’ll gain a few points in the polls. I’ve also read that, though she has had a couple poor debate moments in the past, in general she’s a strong, assertive, and effective debater. She has said all along that she knows what people like Trump are like, so I think we can expect her to handle him effectively and, indeed, cleverly.

After the DNC, the New York Times fashion editor had a surprisingly interesting review of the outfit she wore for her keynote speech. He pointed out that instead of white, which so many women have worn (including Hillary) to celebrate the Suffragettes and women’s rights, Kamala chose to wear what the fashion editor called Commander-in-Chief navy blue. In her stirring and powerful speech and presentation, she demonstrated the strength and fortitude that many seek in a leader. We were able to picture a President Harris.

Tonight she has to do that again, but also get across that unlike Trump she really is one of us. Trump will create that opportunity by giving her a chance to react as a well-adjusted person would to a toxic male asshole. Unlike the debate between Biden and Trump that I couldn’t bring myself to watch, this debate is going to make for a good show. On the one side you have Done-Old Trump, a dated reality star spewing lies and junk, and on the other you have a clear-headed, well spoken, prosecutor who truly “knows Donald Trump’s type.” On their front page, Huffpost calls Trump unpredictable in big red letters, but he’s not. He’ll speak the same old tired schtick because he can’t do otherwise, and Harris will show that she knows his type and make him remarkably small.

This will be a debate worth watching.
