NYT Can't Stop Being a Proud Fluffer for Deranged Donald Trump [1]

On August 31, I posted a Daily Kos commentary on how a NYT article (on the same date) was a fluffer piece for Trump wooing the far-out fringe Mom’s for Liberty. In that commentary, you will see that the NYT wrote not just one lighthearted article about Trump and Moms for Liberty, but two in 24 hours. They both put the paper’s thumb on the scale for Trump wooing this group’s small meeting in DC and making it appear to be a love fest.

Astonishingly the NYT articles never mentioned that only 600 “Moms” were in attendance. They implied it was a huge convention.

So, it is a testament to the NYT often mistaking itself for being Trump’s surrogate PR machine that it inexplicably reposted the slavering August 31 as the lead item (with a smiling photo of Trump and a “Moms” co-founder doing sort of dance moves) in a September 7 email alert, and the article was unedited despite feedback pointing out its omissions and fawning portrayal of Trump and the “Moms.”

One of the article’s most capitulating dismissal of the “Moms” extremism and threat to democracy is this paragraph:

The Moms For Liberty can get a bit carried away — one of their local chapters once quoted Adolf Hitler (“He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future”) and then issued an apology disavowing the Führer (“We should not have quoted him in our newsletter”) — but still, their summit on Friday made for a good case study. It was packed with the sort of voters Mr. Trump hopes can help him win in November: fired-up suburban women.

Such a congenial group that sometimes just gets “carried away”! Who wrote this? The Trump communications director?

The New Republic notes of the article:

While speaking at an event put on by the extremist group Moms for Liberty, Trump spread a baseless conspiracy theory that “your kid goes to school and comes home a few days later with an operation,” referring to transition-related surgeries for trans people. In their [the NYT] write-up of the event, a glowing piece about how Trump “charmed” this group of “conservative moms,” the Times didn’t even mention the moment where he blathered on and on about a crazy conspiracy that has and will never happen.

Remember the relentless NYT coverage of Hillary’s emails almost daily, which never amounted to a hill of beans, (but it offers only limited coverage, by comparison, of Trump’s convictions and trials)? It may have cost her the 2016 election.

That’s not even mentioning that the NYT “sanewashes” Trump’s utterly deranged and unhinged statements and tweets, normalizing a demented candidate.

Well you can’t keep “the paper of record” from tilting its news coverage toward Trump.
