Publisher of NYTimes writes OpEd for WaPo [1]

AG Sulzberger fils, current publisher of the New York Times. in a multipage screed published in his “esteemed competitor” the Washington Post, writes about the potential threat a trumpery administration could pose to Democracy and Freedom of the Press in America.

Mr Sulzberger spends a full three-quarters of his opinion piece documenting the dissolution of freedoms in Hungary by Orban, in India by Modi, and in Brazil by Bolsonaro, highlighting the steps used by these dictators to erase dissent and promote fear.

And he demonstrates how Trump and his minions are proceeding along the same lines in America, but not to be afraid because “press freedom is not a Democratic or Republican ideal but an American one.” And Sulzberger is ensuring freedom of the press by “preparing for legal fights, thinking about how Federal demands for reporters’ notes, emails or phone logs maybe dealt with” ─ and remembering that the “journalistic imperative to promote truth and understanding as a north star” will be the shield for “truth, justice and the American way”.*



I don’t know if A GSulzberger, fils,is naive or just clueless. In 3500 words, he reports the threats that autocrats have generated in their countries, and documents how trump is following the same playbook, with the same expected outcomes but─ it can’t happen here.

Because A G and the NYTimes are on the look-out.

In the remaining thousand words of his essay on the inviolability of journalism, A G claims the ultimate honor of the journalist (and certainly the publisher of the journalism) is to stare down threats of autocratic rule because journalism, and die with their boots on.
