The MAGA influencer ecosystem is even shadier than we thought. www.publicnotice.co/… On Wednesday, the Department of Justice indicted two employees of RT, formerly Russia Today, a Russian state-run media outlet, for covertly shoveling millions of dollars at MAGA influencers happy to do Russia’s bidding. This has led to the delightful specter of high-profile rightwing commentators loudly insisting they were too stupid to know that Russian money was behind the wildly exorbitant sums they received for producing content. ✂️ While watching Tim Pool, Dave Rubin, and Benny Johnson scramble is hilarious, the indictment is no joke. Indeed, it confirms that Russia continues to manipulate American politics via willing right-wingers — the exact thing Trumpers have long insisted isn’t happening. How shady? x "Rubin ultimately agreed to a monthly fee of $400k and a $100k signing bonus to produce 4 videos weekly. Pool got $100k per video. Both Rubin and Pool, along w/ Benny Johnson, are now absurdly saying they are the real victims here and they were deceived." https://t.co/mueKUUUWng — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar) September 6, 2024 "Rubin ultimately agreed to a monthly fee of $400k and a $100k signing bonus to produce 4 videos weekly. Considering what we now know about both Truth Social and Tim Pool, is it fair to ask if he was paid to promote that stock? === Jessica Tarlov Challenges Fox News Co-Hosts to Explain Trump’s Rambling: ‘Tell Me What the Hell He Was Talking About’ www.mediaite.com/… Jessica Tarlov [a democratic strategist] dared her co-hosts on The Five to make a word salad response from Donald Trump comprehensible. On Thursday, the former president spoke at the Economic Club of New York where he was asked if he would “commit to prioritizing legislation to make childcare affordable.” ✂️ (the article reprints FIDJT'S word salad, I won't bother) "[T]oday was also about Donald Trump’s economic speech, and we watched a lot of it,” she said. “And I would dare any of you to listen to his answer on childcare and tell me what the hell he was talking about. It was one of the more incoherent things I’ve ever heard. He thinks tariffs are gonna pay for everything. We know that they’re attacks on the consumer.” ✂️ After a half-hearted attempt by co-host Greg Gutfeld to explain Trump’s remarks, he punched out. “You can have it,” he said. “I’m not that interested in the topic.” === This is a really good, but long, piece from Joyce Vance on yesterday's hearing in Judge Chutkan's courtroom. A Real Judge. joycevance.substack.com/... After months of watching Judge Aileen Cannon botch a simple, straightforward case, it was a relief to see Judge Tanya Chutkan in action today. Not actually see, of course, because this is federal court where cameras aren’t allowed (but should be). I’ve reviewed a full transcript and talked with folks who were in the courtroom. Today’s event was a scheduling conference, not a hearing to dispose of substantive matters, but the pace and ease with which Judge Chutkan navigated the issues was reassuring. It’s clear that in her mind, this is a case like any other, where a criminal defendant is entitled to all the due process the Constitution provides him with, but no special treatment because he’s a former president and a current candidate for the job. In one key exchange, Trump lawyer John Lauro, trying to justify delaying any meaningful activity in the case until after the election to keep information about it away from the public, said, “We’re talking about the presidency of the United States.” “I’m not talking about the presidency of the United States; I’m talking about a four-count criminal indictment,” Judge Chutkan responded. === Trump deputy campaign manager identified in Arlington National Cemetery dustup. www.npr.org/… One of two staffers involved in the altercation at Arlington National Cemetery is a deputy campaign manager for Donald Trump’s reelection bid, NPR has learned. The former president insisted this week the incident did not happen, highlighting a growing disconnect between the messaging of the candidate and his campaign. NPR is identifying both staffers after the campaign’s conflicting responses to the incident last week outside Section 60 of the cemetery, where many casualties of Iraq and Afghanistan are buried. The two staffers, according to a source with knowledge of the incident, are deputy campaign manager Justin Caporale and Michel Picard, a member of Trump’s advance team. Caporale is a one time aide to former first lady Melania Trump who left the White House to work for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis before returning to the Trump campaign. He was also listed as the on-site contact and project manager for the Women for America First rally in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 6, 2021 where Trump urged the crowd to “stop the steal” before some of them stormed the U.S. Capitol. === Noooo! x $119.99 pic.twitter.com/ftm4M9b5sF — Ron Filipkowski (@RonFilipkowski) September 6, 2024 $119.99 === For the musicians and music fans amongst us. x My coolest new colleague at @UMich — former ⁦@nineinchnails⁩ drummer ⁦@ChrisVrenna⁩ is now a professor in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance. ⁦@umichsmtd⁩.
