WriteOn! Changing Your Mind [1]

Nobody is entirely consistent throughout a lifetime. Not writers, and not characters. How boring would it be if we never changed? In fact, something is rather wrong with a certain man who seems proud to say that he hasn’t changed a bit since childhood (when he was also a bully and a brat).

But the changes are often gradual. We grow up, we learn, we meet new people who don’t fit with what we used to think. Sometimes it is persuasion, sometimes duress. When changes are sudden, there is some precipitating event that may feel like a shock, an eye-opening, a revelation. From a book or speech that suddenly strikes a whole new chord in us, to a near-death experience, powerful events can change us.

Change and growth in our characters is one of the things that attracts readers to our books or series of books. How can we show what causes them to change their attitudes, realistically?

Write a scene about one of your characters changing their mind or attitude. What caused the switch?
