Motley Fool asks “Is it time to cancel Boeing’s Big Rocket?” [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-09-03 So, a little background for everyone…. The Space Launch System is NASA’s really big rocket. Guess who builds it? The company that also can’t seem to fly to the International Space Station aka Boeing. There has been emerging data to suggest that Boeing’s problems are limited in its space sector to just the Starliner, and the Motley Fool asks the obvious question “Is it time to cancel the SLS?” To highlight a few items 1). There are cheaper alternatives in the form of SpaceX’s Starship and Blue Origin’s New Glenn. 2). NASA was required to use a cost-plus contract to pay for all of the developmental costs for SLS and all the operational costs of SLS. 3). SLS costs $4.1 Billion per launch. 4). And here is the real kicker In 2023, OIG tallied up all the costs involved in Artemis to date, and projected the total price tag will hit $93 billion sometime next year. In the coming days and weeks, I hope to detail the emerging mess that is Artemis. This isn’t to say that we shouldn’t go back to the moon. Rather, it’s time to have a serious discussion about Artemis, much like we did about Constellation at the start of President Obama’s administration.
