Street Prophets Sunday Coffee Hour: How I Create [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-09-01 Welcome to Street Prophets Sunday Coffee Hour. This is an open thread so grab something to drink and sit a spell and let us know what is new with you. All my life I have loved creating things. I create graphic art on my computer. I do expressionist paintings. I do pen and ink etchings. I write poetry, fantasy short stories and some more contemporary writing. I have one novel done and I am currently writing my Steampunk novel. I knit, crochet, embroidery, needlepoint and sew. I created a Princess Bride wedding dress. I cook and am now writing my second cookbook. So how does this creative process work? I am sure it is different for everyone. Let's start with painting. I have been told I am an expressionist painter. Expressionism is defined as art that expresses emotional experience rather than physical reality. I don't paint from real life. I don't have models in front of me. What I have is a picture inside my mind that I then try to transfer to a canvas. I work in acrylics because of their vibrant colors and ease of blending. I do a lot of pictures depicting water or of outer space. They are two things that appeal to me. I also do graphic art on my computer. I illustrated my fantasy short stories with my graphic art. I have written poetry for many years. I do free form poetry and it has been published in newspapers and on the internet. I can't really describe how I write poetry. It just seems to flow from my pen. You can find some here https://artbymichelewilson.com/poetry.htm I have been writing since I was in high school some 60 years ago. I have been heavily influenced by science fiction and fantasy. I discovered that genre when I was 10 years old and was exploring the library. In my teens while other girls I knew were reading about boys I was exploring the stars. I have a fantasy short story series featuring my shape shifting elf Sean at https://artbymichelewilson.com/storyindex.htm My Dad taught me to sew. For many years I made my own clothes. I am top heavy and off the rack rarely fits. Besides getting clothes to fit properly I was also able to indulge in my love of bright colors and designs. I can even match plaids. My niece benefitted from my sewing with a Princess Bride wedding dress and an Arwen Lord of the Rings dress for a Halloween party. I taught myself to knit, crochet, embroider and needlepoint. I lost count of the number of needle working projects I did for Mom and grandmother. I finally got around to doing some for myself. I find working with my hands doing crafts to be very peaceful. Finally we come to cooking. Anyone who has ever followed me here knows I love to cook. I have been cooking since I was 13. I have well over 2,000 original recipes. I create recipes two ways. The first way is to wing it. I get an idea in my head. Let us take my Beef Stew recipe. I wanted to do a beef stew made in a crockpot and I wanted it to have a kick to it. I started out figuring out the staples like beef and vegetables. I then decided what would jazz it up and came up with a broth full of flavor. The result was https://artbymichelewilson.com/spicybeefstew.htm The second way I do recipes is to research how others have done them. What happens is that as I read their recipes an idea starts to form in my mind of how I would do it. For example Reid asked for Beef Stroganoff. I pulled up recipes for it and as I read them an idea formed in my mind as to how I wanted to make it. The result is https://artbymichelewilson.com/beefstroganoff.htm So that is some of the ways that I create.
