Kitchen Table Kibitzing September 1, 2024 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-09-01 Spinal Trap It was way back in 2016 that I was walking back from a concert in Chico with P50. He commented on his observation that I was bending forward as I walked. “I am? I hadn’t noticed.” So I started observing my reflection in store windows as I walked by, and, sure enough, I was a little bent forward. This has gotten progressively worse as the years have gone by. The bending has been accompanied with ever increasing pain levels. I do physical therapy exercises and I attended a month-long Zoom meeting series on pain management. I requested, and received, an MRI of my spine, which I was able to see on line. Srsy messed up spine. This is just something I deal with; just happy to be alive, and having chosen a sport, pool. in which you have to bend over to shoot anyway. I bring up this personal story because I’m taking a new step soon. I’ve been approved by my doctor for a Disabled Person Placard. This will allow me to park in any handicap parking spot .A qualified permanently disabled person may obtain a Disabled Person (DP) placard or DP License Plates for all of their vehicles, for no additional fee. When folks with placards have a non-visible but serious handicap, they often are criticized as scammers. I see letters in the paper frequently from these folks. I have been sensitive to this, but now I walk with a cane unless it’s a very short distance. Interestingly there was a trial a few years ago in which a warm product, Hydrafil, was injected in some volunteer’s spines. They were ecstatic. The product is FDA approved. HYDRAFIL™, is a proprietary hydrogel technology that when heated becomes a liquid that can be injected through a 17-gauge needle into the nucleus of an intervertebral disc. Once it enters the body the gel incorporates with the existing nucleus and cools to form an integrated solid. I have been following information on this for years, but as yet it hasn’t been approved for general use. Who knows, maybe there were long term problems. In any case, I’d go anywhere and pay anything if it were to work.
