IAN: September 1, 2024 - Just over two months now [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-08-31 I recommend Friday the 13th as a good excuse for a party. The best one my oldest and dearest and I ever threw was one in September. I heard there were people claiming to have attended who wouldn’t have been allowed within ten miles of the place — there are limits to what I will put up with in my home. It was nice to be (however briefly) legendary in Los Angeles fandom, even if none of them had any idea it was me. As you can see by Itzl's concerned look, this group is for us to check in at to let people know we are alive, doing OK, and not affected by such things as heat, blizzards, floods, wild fires, hurricanes, tornadoes, power outages, or other such things that could keep us off DKos. It's also so we can find other Kossacks nearby for in-person checks when other methods of communication fail - a buddy system. Members come here to check in. If you're not here, or anywhere else on DKos, and there are adverse conditions in your area (floods, heatwaves, hurricanes, etc.), we and your buddy are going to check up on you. If you are going to be away from your computer for a day or a week, let us know here. We care! IAN is a great group to join, and a good place to learn to write diaries. Drop one of us a PM to be added to the Itzl Alert Network anytime! We all share the publishing duties, and we welcome everyone who reads IAN to write diaries for the group! Every member is an editor, so anyone can take a turn when they have something to say, photos and music to share, a cause to promote or news! ************************* Reclaiming My Time. An exhibit at the Smithsonian. According to the CDC, cancer death rates have fallen by nearly a third in in the last 25 years. The article is in the Baltimore Sun behind a paywall. Another from the Smithsonian. What do you know about the women’s suffrage movement? From Allrecipes: Zucchini Corn Fritters. When a patient has something exacerbated by cold, the British National Health Service has authorized doctors to prescribe turning up the heat and will subsidize the cost. A month of budget meals for two. From Allrecipes. I didn’t know dumpster diving is illegal in Oregon. Sponges made of whey are being used to extract gold from old computer parts. Standard time starts up again in November. Something is producing oxygen on the ocean floor. Scientists have no idea where the energy for the process is coming from. A Mother Jones take on the Trump campaign bruhaha at Arlington National Cemetery. Best beverage for every state. This is a list from Reader’s Digest, so make of it what you will. I don’t think David Sirota is especially popular around here, but he has some interesting things to say about the genesis of Project 2025. The origin and evolution of Italian pasta shapes. ************************* Last Monday I got a begging letter from Judicial Watch, frantic about needing my support for their lawsuits against Biden using the DOJ to try to destroy Donald Trump. I didn’t respond because I would have had to waste a stamp, but I really wanted to tell them that Trump doesn’t need any help to destroy himself. I woke up on Tuesday to no power. I have a landline, so I called PGE to see what the announcement was. 1137 households affected and 1142 calls reporting it, power likely restored by 10:30 AM. Eventually, I went back to bed, and when I checked the time (still no power, but my wristwatch is solar powered), it was 11:00 AM. 1137 households affected and 1163 calls, power likely restored by 11:30. The lights came back on at 11:25. Wednesday was a 6-month visit after getting my ears cleaned out last winter. I got my ears cleaned out again; the peculiar pops are gone from the right ear, and I have an appointment to return for same in February. Also, my grandson is now in 7th grade. Apparently, he is also doing cross-country. Yesterday I got a text from the Ted Cruz campaign. My reply was that I was donating to his opponent and fuck off. I have successfully unsubscribed. ************************* Love you guys!
