Israel agrees to a limited "humanitarian pause" in Gaza [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-08-29 The World Health Organization (WHO) issued a statement that the Israeli government has agreed to an emergency pause in its war on Gaza to facilitate mass polio vaccinations in the besieged enclave. The UN’s health agency says Israel has agreed to at least three days of “humanitarian pauses” in Gaza to allow UN health officials to administer polio vaccinations in the territory. That means that the humanitarian pauses could potentially continue after the three days. WHO says that the agreement is for pauses for eight hours a day, between 6am and 3pm local time. “The way we discussed and agreed, the campaign will start on the first of September, in central Gaza, for three days, and there will be a humanitarian pause during the vaccination,” said Rik Peeperkorn, the agency’s representative for Palestinian territory. The vaccinations will start in central Gaza as the first three-day pause begins on September 1, then vaccinations will move to southern Gaza for three days, then to the north for three days. A fourth day for vaccinations is possible under the agreed pause in each zone if needed. The WHO confirmed on Aug. 23 that at least one baby has been paralyzed by the type 2 polio virus, the first such case in the territory in 25 years. The U.N. Security Council will meet later on Thursday on the humanitarian situation in Gaza. "We are ready to cooperate with international organizations to secure this campaign, serving and protecting more than 650,000 Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip," Hamas official Basem Naim told Reuters. The Israeli military's humanitarian unit (COGAT) said on Wednesday that the vaccination campaign would be conducted in coordination with the Israeli military "as part of the routine humanitarian pauses that will allow the population to reach the medical centers where the vaccinations will be administered." www.msn.com/… Meanwhile in the West Bank over a dozen people were killed in the past 24 hours as Israel carried out raids across several cities within the occupied Palestinian territory. Israel is also considering to evacuate civilians throughout in the West Bank to root out militants, but many fear once the evacuees leave they will not be allowed to return to their land or homes. Hopefully the humanitarian pause will be extended, so that Hamas and Israel can be pressured to return to negotiating a ceasefire agreement to stop this war and release all captives immediately.
