If you believe in a 50-state strategy, Texas is Big on that list. Canvassing Texas is a start [1]

I was talking last night to a former Democratic office holder, who wondered how things were going. It’s a common question. Old clients, Democratic office-holders and even old volunteers simply crave this information. If you are reading this, you probably do, too.

When i explain what Hope Springs from Field PAC [website] is doing (especially early on), data collection isn’t one of those things that excites people. But as i was explaining last night, knocking on doors and documenting the results is that “in the trenches” factor that pays off time and again.

We start off, and are constantly, building towards GOTV, whether it is through the Issues Survey, or Constituent Request forms or even Incident Reports and our Election/Voter Protection efforts.

17,203 Hope Springs volunteers (still a temporary number, as not all the results are in) came out to canvass last Saturday. What is really interesting (to me) is that we had four states where more that 1,700 volunteers showed up on Saturday. Texas was fourth.

Why are we knocking on doors in Texas? Well, Democrats lost a Senate seat in West Virginia, and that actually matters. Our majority in the Senate is at risk and anything we can do to change that dynamic needs to be considered.

Plus, we had reasonable success in 2021, especially when we were canvassing with the staff of the Democrats who left Texas in the attempt to stop the legislature from passing new voting restrictions that year. But, let’s face it, Texas is a big brick wall that requires thousands of cracks to make it fall down. No one knows when it will fall, but we are taking the sledge hammer to the GOP wall there. There are other reasons, as well.

But it is worth noting that, since Kamala Harris announced, we have lost 14 canvass areas (ceding them to the Harris campaign or Coordinated Campaign in several states and sending volunteers to their canvasses) and, yet, our volunteer turn out continues to grow! So people are excited, enthusiastic, DETERMINED, and showing up!
