But as a sociologist, I decided to explore it to see if I could find out how he is getting so many people to believe his lies. I now think I have found an explanation in existing research that explains how he has got so many people to believe his lies. And with that explanation I now feel Trump is a very serious threat to the survival of the United States as a free society. Why? he admitted to one of his employs that he is effectively using the same technique Hitler used, the repeated lie propaganda technique, to get his followers to believe his lies. A easy to read and accurate, but incomplete, summary of the research on this topic is in Psychology Today www.psychologytoday.com/... What is missing in the current discussion of this in the psychology literature is that this way to get people to believe lies is rooted in Hitler’s book, Mein Kampf. If Trump wasn’t lying when he said he has not read this book, it is because he had someone else read it to him. He is actually employing the technique Hitler used to turn most of the people in Germany into the war machine that produced the European branch of WWII. I cannot find out if Japan’s leader was doing the same thing. The main reason we need to take this apparent idiocy serious is that Trump is using the propaganda technique that Hitler used to to get Germans to play their role in WWII. A copy of the six repetitions of the lies that I found in one reading of the debate is down at the end of this article. Until I found this explanation, I just could not believe all these people were believing Trump’s lies. Now the part of Hitler’s action that goes beyond just getting people to believe lies is to get them to act based on those lies. The key here is how Hitler treated the Jews. Now Trump is starting to treat Hispanics in much the same way Hitler started on the Jews. The more I look at it the more amazed I am to see how what Trump is doing is so similar to what Hitler did. Trumps efforts to get rid of Hispanics are very similar to what Hitler did early in setting the Jews up for extermination. One of the lies Trump has promoted has now become the major theme in one of his televised presidential campaign ads. On August 21st I saw a campaign ad by Trump on MSNBC that presented three cases where a Hispanic migrant committed serious crimes. Trump is using those three cases to support his claim that Hispanic migrants are criminals that the countries south of us are using to get rid of their criminals. Trump’s conclusion is just the opposite of what the scientific research shows but I am sure more people in the United States now believe Trump’s lies than believe the scientific research. There is no way to know how far along Hitler’s path Trump will go. But when he promises to round Hispanics up and ship them out of the United States he does not say what will happen to the Hispanic citizens of the the United States who refuse to go. One of the main differences between science and propaganda is propagandist can always find a few cases to support their argument while scientists look at a representative set of data and compares the frequency of cases that refute and support a theory. And they use statistics to show them the chances they are wrong when they they concluded that the data supports a theory. The propagandist only needs to repeat descriptions of the cases that supports their propaganda. I don’t know how it can be done but Trump’s supporters need to be told that the reason they support Trump is because they have been subjected to propaganda just like Hitler used to convince Germans to try to exterminate Jews and take over the rest of Europe during WWII. This technique is based on the real weakness in humans reported in the Psychology Today article above, we are very inclined to believe a lie if we hear it several times without checking it out. I have not found any explanation of why we suffer from this logical flaw but if the human species is to survive we need an effective way to treat the victims of this most evil propaganda technique. As I think about it, the chances of being exposed to dangers repeated lies through printed and mass media was not around during our evolution so the need to deal with it is too new to be part of our nature. Below, I have copied Trump’s repeated lie about Hispanic migrants. The reality is that Hispanics have a lower crime rate than whites and that it is lowest among illegal Hispanic immigrants.
