Kamala's style [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-08-25 This diary is about MVP Harris’s clothing style. Please don’t roll your eyes yet. Whether she decided on her ‘uniform’ on her own, or with the help of a stylist, she did it right. I worked for a while in a couture salon, so if what’s coming next sounds like nit picking, there’s the context for why. Men wear suits for business and politics. They’re power suits that reflect their status, especially now, that clothing has been casualed down so much. Not trendy, timeless. No frivolity. Obama famously found a cut of suit he liked, and he’s still wearing it. He got them made in various colors. But, they always look the same, namely great. Women in power carve out their own styles. Elizabeth Warren has mostly black pants, with a cropped jacket, which is not a suit jacket. Angela Merkel did the same. Hillary mostly wears pantsuits, but the style and colors are all over the map. Not Kamala Harris. The slacks have a wide enough leg to accommodate any kind of footwear, including boots. They taper slightly at the knee, but not so much that when she’s seated, they bunch up. Her jackets are a tour de force. They are cut long. This deflects attention from the fact that the Vice President is on the short side at only 5’4”. They also eliminate the possibility of visible pantie lines so she doesn’t have to worry about (or get called out) for that. The cut of the jackets has a gentle curve, giving them a feminine profile. But not so curvy, that they emphasize any part of her shape, or bunch up anywhere. The tailoring actually hides her body shape, which I think is a good thing. The clothing doesn’t highlight anything someone could consider a ‘figure flaw’. The wide lapels also highlight a feminine shape. She looks subtlely feminine, but nothing more. Stay with me, please, I’ll get to why all this is so brilliant. The VP’s suits include a decent palette of colors, plenty of darks, but also some pastels. But she never wears anything that could be called gaudy. It doesn’t appear any of her suits are crepe, which is kind of dead looking, but rather, a fine suiting wool with luster, but not sheen. No boucle (think Chanel suits), because this is not fashion. The blouses she wears all have a relatively high neck, but low enough to allow room for her short pearl necklaces, so they don’t disappear under the blouse neckline. The blouses are likely made from silk charmeuse, again, luster, but not shine. She doesn’t wear blingy jewelry. It’s mostly pearls, which are luminous, without being shiny, so they won’t reflect onto her skin in bright lights. No pendants tilting off to one side to be captured in a photo. MVPs choice of clothing for the acceptance speech was brilliant. It was a man’s navy blue. The women in the audience wore white to signify women’s progress. Not the future commander-in-chief. Choosing a monochromatic blouse added to the gravitas of the color choice. There was nothing in her clothing to distract the viewer. The bow at the neck provided the feminine touch in lieu of jewelry. Here’s why I think all this is significant EVEN IF IT SHOULD NOT BE. She is auditioning to be the first woman to be ‘the most powerful person in the world’. NOTHING should distract from that. Her clothing choices say “I am serious, I’m ready for any situation. The attention isn’t on me, it’s on what I know, and can do. Don’t get distracted by stupid shit, we’ve got work to do. No, you cannot fuck with me. My power is consistent, and timeless. And by the way, I’m a woman.” Her clothing reflects that message. It’s just another of the many many ways in which she is preternaturally prepared. She couldn’t do it better.
