Why Do You Write? [1]

Why do we write?

If I were going to make a poll out of this question, what would the options be?

1. Because it’s my job and the paycheck buys my groceries. I have a desk with a typewriter or computer and timecard … hahaha, nope. Those days are gone with the dinosaurs, or at least the 20th century.

2. I am a crusader. There is something I believe that everyone else must know about. Therefore, I will tell them. It is a noble calling and many DKOS diaries come from this place. I love reading these.

3. The Fourth Estate exists to keep the other Three in check. (Bonus points for people who know what the other Three are.*) *3. Judicial, Legislative and Executive.

4. I am a writer of fiction and my life is driven by the requirements of my publisher and agent. (Followers and rankings and sales and book tours and signings, oh my! But wait. When will I have time to write?) Indy authors have a Sisyphean task of writing AND marketing.

5. My entire life exists electronically now. Social media and the blogosphere is the only place I have an identity. Onlysky, Bluesky, Substack, Wordpress, Blogger, Mastodon, Reddit, the book of faces, the dead bird site. Other, darker, deeper places which shall remain nameless. I may not know neighbors in the meatsuit world, but I have real connections in the digital world. What does this have to do with writing? I write because I’m too damned old and ugly — or the wrong demographic — for anyone to watch a video.

6. I don’t ducking know. I’ve been writing as long as I can remember and it’s an addiction. I’d stop if I could, but I don’t know how. Writing is what I do. Writing is who I am.

8. "Tell Cersei I want her to know it was me." — Olenna Tyrell moments before death, with a smirk, about murdering Joffrey.

9. Daenerys: “I will have a very large army and very large dragons.”

“DRACARYS” — Danaerys Targaryen over Kings Landing. Again, again, and again.

10. Drogon: “Huff, Whoosh, Pant, pant, pant ...”

I am a writer. I am part Tyrion, part Olenna, part Danaerys and part Drogon. Which part and how much depends on the day and the situation.
