Guilt Over Financial Postericide (Exploding National Debt): A Cause of the Nation’s Foul Mood [1]

There are many reasons why a super-majority of Americans think the nation is headed in the wrong direction. These reasons include a decline in purchasing power among the non-rich, rising authoritarianism, the epidemic of loneliness and a general sense that the center cannot hold. But there is also the guilt we share for our profoundly selfish practice of stealing money from our posterity (our unborn descendants) via uncontrolled deficit spending.

Rather than securing the blessings of liberty for ourselves AND our posterity, as the Constitution's Preamble directs us to do, we are hoarding all the blessings for ourselves by paying for our pleasures with money stolen from our unborn children. This is a terrible crime against humanity. It is financial postericide.

We are failing intergenerational ethics 101. We have a 35 trillion dollar national debt and are not even pretending to stop the bleeding, on either side of the political aisle. This saddles our posterity with poverty and all the life shortening and darkening that goes with it. But it also destroys our own self-respect, our own sense of worth. It makes our achievements hollow. We know deep down that we are all deplorable intergenerational criminals. We are imposters.

Only budget surpluses can free us from our greed-fueled national malaise. Only budget surpluses can start to right our wrongs against the unborn. This will take shock therapy. This will take grand bargains. This will take repentance. This will take citizens demanding that their leaders proclaim: “Ask not what your unborn children can do for you, ask what you can do for your unborn children”.
