Kitchen Table Kibitzing 8/13/2024: The Golden Road [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-08-13 Maxfield Parrish: Reservoir at Villa Falconieri, Frascati (1903) Good evening, Kibitzers! We have old-school summer weather here this week! Daytime highs in the lower 80s, down into the 60s at night, every now and then there’s a thunderstorm — it’s still warmer than my favorite weather, but it’s vastly preferable to this newfangled “summer” they have nowadays. Get off my lawn! I saw yesterday that poor 714day came back from Alaska with Covid, only to be earthquaked while she was trying to get some rest. Wear masks, my friends, and get the shots — Covid is still out there! And pretty soon, it’ll be there with its pal, the flu, so get that shot too, okay? We need everyone to survive past election day, not even just because we need your vote, but because we all need to see that asshole get kicked to the curb one more time. We need to stand together on 1/20/2025 and cheer and cry and sing. It was so good last time, but this time, I think it might just be the end of relevance for him. Ohpleaseohpleaseohplease. So! We got notice last night that the Deadheads for Kamala online event starts half an hour before this diary posts. If it turns out to have a livestream on YouTube as some of the others have, I hope to embed that here, but either way, I know at least some KTK folks will be paying attention to that. So, I am going with a supplementary Harris/Walz collection of short videos while we see what shapes up. As a note, if you attend one of these big events, of course you will want to toss some money into the collection plate; I mean, duh, plus it’s a tribal thing, and it’s just a joyful thing. But please also consider contributing to downballot races of your choice, especially where money hasn’t flowed quite so freely. The further down ballot you go, the more difference a dollar can make, but also state and local candidates, besides being important themselves, drive turnout for the top of the ticket. See Brainwrap’s latest diary for ActBue links galore. So, here are some short ads, music pieces, and commentary that I’ve been seeing on YouTube lately. Eleven Films is an Oregon production company that has again, as in 2020, suspended all their client work to focus on electing Democrats and defeating fascism. This is their powerful ad, Democrats Defend Democracy. [2:16] Back in 2020, when Jon Batiste was bandleader on the Colbert show, he wrote a song for the “MVP” candidate, Kamala Harris. [2:30] In 2006, Kamala was San Francisco District Attorney. She appeared at Tavis Smiley’s annual State of the Black Union conference, and had some things to say about crime that blow away any claim that she’s a) somehow “not Black” or b) “a cop” who loves to lock up Black men. [3:57] These days, finding “folk music” doesn’t require intrepid collectors travelling small towns looking for someone playing guitar on the porch. Now it’s people making something up and using technology to put together audio, then video, and put it out online to be shared. This is Rise Up for Kamala, by YouTuber “Loki Odinson”. [2:03] Fred Lieder is a professional cellist, but here, he goes to guitar for his original song, Childless Cat Lady Blues. (His Tim’s Blues, on the other hand, is a cello instrumental.) [3:52] I had no idea there was an Italian American Democrats organization (turns out, they go back to 1993) or that they had a Women’s Leadership Initiative, but here they are, making joyful videos! [1:08] Democracy Rising is a fairly new channel that offers little information about themselves, but their Kamala Girl Power song hits the spot. [2:17] Something a little different from The Parody Project: guest artist William Galison brings us a lovely Tennessee Waltz parody. (Don’t miss this one!) [2:34] Here’s the Harris/Walz campaign’s ad introducing Tim Walz. [1:27] The woman at this channel, knotheadusc, posts videos she takes and songs she likes to sing, which is awesome. Sometimes, she makes up parody songs (we’ll be hearing from her again!) — this one is to Little Peggy March’s I Will Follow Him. (Stick with it through the ballad part; it gets up tempo later!) [3:11] If you’ve been wondering what on earth the objection is to Gov. Walz’s humane policy of providing free menstrual products in schools (oh, I get it — they don't need a reason), the NowThis political channel, NowThis Impact, has a short explainer for which I will issue an Eyeroll Alert. Don’t hurt yourself! [1:03] Rocky Mountain Mike turns The Four Seasons’ Walk Like a Man into a Walz theme song. [1:10] The Truth Matters channel makes political ads from a left perspective. They had an earlier version of this video with a front three minutes debunking Trumpian bullshit, so when they call this the “no lies version”, they mean they’ve just cut that first three minutes and kept the happy part. This is called Hope From Despair (No Lies Version). [2:36] As I note every time I break this KTK rule, the Lincoln Project is a bunch of Republicans, and KTK does not endorse supporting them with our donations when there are Democrats who need our support to win. However, they do some effective messaging now and then, and I found their ad American Greatness particularly moving. [1:07] What better way to close than with the Grateful Dead? Here’s Let the Good Times Roll, from 1989 Alpine Valley Music Theater (WI) footage on the Downhill From Here DVD. [4:59] Oh, why not one more, and please knock wood and make whatever signs against evil your heritage may provide, because I am uncharacteristically jumping the gun with He’s Gone. He WILL be gone; we will manifest this, and in January, we will play this again. This is from Foxboro, MA, in July, 1989.
