Kitchen Table Kibitzing: Election musings [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-08-08 Phew! I’ve been glued to MSNBC for two weeks now, much like I was in 2008, not wanting to miss any breaking news, eager to watch campaign events as they happen. It was truly such a joyful experience watching the Harris-Walz rally in Philly the other day; I felt as if each of the 12,000 plus attendees represented millions of us as they applauded and chanted their relief that there is now hope against the MAGA movement. It’s easier to open my eyes in the morning, my days feel filled with promise and I’m trying to figure out how I can best help the campaign. I’ve thought about postcarding, as my experience phone banking in the past few races has been so frustrating. I can’t even imagine being part of a texting team. Along with all the joy, however, there are things we need to be aware of which aren’t pleasant. Yesterday’s news included snippets from an interview with Biden in which he says he fears what will happen if Trump loses. He promised a bloodbath, Biden says, and we have to believe in what he says. And then there was the ruling in Georgia, which seems to promise problems with certifying the election. From the Guardian: Georgia’s state board of elections adopted new rules for local election boards that permit them to withhold the certification of a vote in the face of unspecified discrepancies – a Republican-led move that could cause uncertainty and confusion after future election days. The five-person board passed the measure in a 3-2 vote. The three board members who voted for it – Dr Janice Johnson, Rick Jeffares and Janelle King – were praised by name three days ago by Donald Trump at an Atlanta campaign rally. The rule was proposed by Michael Heekin, a Republican appointee to the Fulton election board who refused to certify the presidential primary earlier this year. The rule requires local boards to initiate a “reasonable inquiry” when discrepancies emerge at a poll, and gives the power to withhold certification until that inquiry was completed. It does not define the term “reasonable inquiry”, nor does it establish strict limitations on the breadth of an inquiry. The Georgia rule is expected to be challenged in court. Lawyer Marc Elias sat down Monday with Rachel Maddow to discuss GOP plans to invalidate the 2024 election should Trump lose. Elias, who worked for Biden in 2020 and runs Democracy Docket, said the Trump team is much more organized this year than they were in 2020 and in 2016 and that we can expect problems with certification to be a big issue this year. "I had never seen it before 2020," Elias said frankly. "The idea of tinkering with the certification at the local level was just out of bounds. That is part of the pageantry of democracy — it is what makes us great as a country ... but as Donald Trump proved, the loyalty to his crimes and misdeeds is stronger than peoples' instinct for self-preservation." www.salon.com/... Elias is confident that if we all take action we can prevail over these attempts to subvert the election. Everyone has to speak out on this issue,he says, post on social media, attend canvas board meetings, file comments to the Georgia election board, find out who is on boards and sit in on meetings. Every citizen has a role to play here. I recall in 2008 how many people from blue states traveled to help out in swing states across the country but haven’t yet seen that as an option. How are you helping out with this historic election?
