SwiftBoats and Coconut Trees [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-08-07 Apparently JD Vance thinks that Tim Walz "just fell out of a coconut tree" in May of 2005 when he retired after 24 years of service in the Minnesota National Guard - in what Vance falsely claims was Walz abandoning his duties to avoid being deployed to Iraq.... Vance's clumsy SWIFTBOATING attempt willfully ignores "the context of all in which [Walz] lived and what came before [him]." Had Vance conducted an intellectually honest examination of the timeline - even the most cursory one -it would have revealed a very different picture of Walz's decision…. That appears something that Vance is incapable of…. The truth - in its simplest terms - is that Walz's retirement from the Guard came more than TEN MONTHS BEFORE his unit was deployed (and after Walz had already been deployed multiple times, including being deployed overseas for six months after 9-11)…. The "Context of all that Walz lived and what came before" in his life reveals even more…. After having served as a volunteer in John Kerry's 2004 presidential campaign (including the first-hand witnessing of the Republican SWIFTBOAT SMEAR against Kerry)., Walz rose to Kerry's Campaign Coordinator for his County, as well as Congressional District Coordinator for "Vets for Kerry." …. That experience was clearly a turning point for Walz. By early 2005, he had decided to enter national politics - a decision that made continuing service at the same time in the National Guard untenable….. Running an uphill campaign for Congress - a challenging (Many at the time would have said an Impossible) task that would require his total commitment - unencumbered by any other duties….. His efforts, beginning in the spring of that year, culminated in his stunning upset of a seven term Republican incumbent - followed by 12 years service in the US House of Representatives, and two terms an Governor of Minnesota…..
