Vote Elissa Slotkin for Senate in the Michigan primary [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-08-06 Control of Congress and the Michigan Legislature hang in the balance. Today’s primary election in Michigan will have important consequences for both. Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-Michigan) is retiring, and the Democratic nominee will likely be the next senator. Michigan is a state that has consistently sent Democrats to the Senate the whole time I’ve been a Michigan voter — I’m fairly certain I didn’t vote for the reelection of Senator Spencer Abraham (R-Michigan, 1995 — 2001). It is mainly through gerrymandering that Republicans have had majorities in the state legislature and the state’s delegation to the U. S. House. Abraham was junior to Senator Carl Levin (D-Michigan, 1979 — 2015), and conceded to Stabenow in that fateful election of 2000. Ah, simpler times, when Republicans admitted that they lost. (Photo by Willy Sanjuan/Invision/AP) Now the top contenders to replace Stabenow are Rep. Elissa Slotkin, who has represented Michigan’s U. S. House District 7 since last year and has been in Congress since 2021, and Hill Harper, an actor best known for CSI: NY. Hill Harper’s heart is in the right place. But he started trying for too high an office. Maybe he should have tried for Michigan’s U. S. House District 13, currently held by Rep. Shri Thanedar, an immigrant with an inspiring backstory who, aside from voting with the other Democrats, has been a complete disappointment as a legislator so far. Thanedar, by the way, also started trying for too high an office, he tried for the Democratic nomination for Michigan governor, causing many to fear he was trying to help the Republican nominee in the general election. Elissa Slotkin has a much better track record. She’s a center left Democrat with a middle-of-the-pack leadership score from GovTrack. Compare to Thanedar, who is farther left but has a bottom of the barrel leadership score from GovTrack. Harper of course is not even listed on GovTrack. I’m voting for Elissa Slotkin for senator. I think you should, too, if you’re also a Michigan voter. Visit her campaign website. P.S. Detroit voters, vote yes on Proposal L to renew the library millage. Some of that money will be stolen on the so-called “tax captures” and that needs to stop, but that’s a fight we can fight only if the millage is renewed.
