Hurricaine Debby Makes Landfall [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-08-05 I may not be the best at weather diaries, but didn’t see anything up this morning, so thought I’d get one going. Hurricane Debby rapidly intensified ahead of its landfall in Florida, joining a growing list of recent storms to accomplish the feat, as the planet warms and stacks the deck in favor of strengthening storms. Rapid intensification is exactly what it sounds like: A storm increasing in strength over a short period of time. But a storm can’t be considered a rapid intensifier unless its winds increase by 35 mph in 24 hours or less, a feat Debby accomplished early Monday before landfall. The storm strengthened from a 45 mph tropical storm at 2 a.m. on Sunday to an 80 mph hurricane at 2 a.m. Monday. CNN.com The bad news about Debby is she is moving slow, and nothing is going to speed her up anytime soon. So while a category one storm so not as much wind threat there is a lot of threat from excessive rain. Tropical storm conditions are already affecting Florida, with more than 10 inches of rain in some areas and more than 250,000 energy customers without power. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 61 counties expected to be affected by the storm. In a statement, his office said that 3,000 National Guard members have been mobilized. Parts of central and northern Florida and southeastern North Carolina could get 6 to 12 inches of rain, with up to 18 inches possible. And parts of southeast Georgia and South Carolina could get 10 to 20 inches of rain, with up to 30 inches in some areas, the hurricane center said. NBC News Locally here in NC the rain is going to be a problem as we have gotten a lot of rain recently so the ground is already saturated. I can’t find an article, but it was noted we had a couple of sewage spills in the region this weekend from the rains we just had. Stay safe everyone! Check in when you can.
