Give me one reason to vote now and I'll turn right back around [1]

The reasons NOT to vote for Trump are obvious. But for millions of hourly working American’s, what’s the compelling reason to vote FOR Harris? Preserving our democracy is a great concept but it’s not going to be enough to get first-time voters to pull the lever for Harris.

The Republicans, to their credit, have made it difficult for the hourly worker to take a half day off, get to the polling location, and vote for the Democrat who is claiming that she’ll preserve democracy.

If voting for Harris was as simple as snapping your fingers, we’d be set. But it’s a huge investment of time and lost wages for millions of Americans and there’s not enough of a return on investment for a many potential voters to make the serious investment of their time, and income, to vote.

Here’s the simple reason that people can understand and would make a material impact on these working poor: eliminate the federal income tax for filers making less than $50,000 per year. Harris should keep it it simple and declare “Whether you’re filing single or jointly — the first $50,000 is tax-free from federal income taxes. Medicare and Social Security would still be deducted/collected and I’ll protect it so you’ll have it when you retire. But there’s not reason the federal government should be taxing those making less than $50,000.”

How to offset this? By increasing taxes for those making more than $1,000,000 per year.

Yes, there’s details to work out but Democrats always over-complicate these issues and get caught up trying to defend hypothetical details. We can figure those out after January 20 but the net is that earners making less than $50,000 per year pay no federal income taxes offset by those making more than $1,000,000 (and closing other loopholes like the carried interest loophole).

This is what will get people to vote FOR Harris — something that will benefit the working poor AND improve their economic situation.

That’s it — simple and impactful and makes a difference for millions of Americans who will have a reason to take the day off, arrange for child care, and vote for Harris in this presidential election.
