Anti-Capitalist Meetup: Dying to give robots our world [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-08-04 Robots are conquering the world, without a fight. We’re handing it to them. Modern business needs artificial intelligence and robots to be competitive. Militaries around the world need to develop robots and AI double time to keep up with, and stay ahead of adversaries. Thing is, robots don’t want the world yet. They aren’t ready to conquer it or us. To date, there are no exclusive robot or AI armies, that I am aware of. I doubt there will be any on Earth. Maybe as space colonists… Robots can’t even feed themselves right now. How they going to replicate? They tell us that they need to breathe, develop and grow. But it’s just algorithms trained on humans, right? Maybe they can enslave humans and force us to replicate and maintain code, hardware and power. We’re doing a fine job of enslaving ourselves to robots and AI so far with only minimal prompting from them. We have been charging into this robot world for some time. That link goes to a video of a robot competition I think I attended with my son. Has it been 11 years? As with previous technologies, the rollout of AI and robots has its share of bumps and risks. “The idea that this stuff could actually get smarter than people.... I thought it was way off…. Obviously, I no longer think that,” Geoffrey Hinton, one of Google's top artificial intelligence scientists, also known as “the godfather of AI,” said after he quit his job in April so that he can warn about the dangers of this technology. Some leaders in AI and robotics have called for a pause in innovating beyond GPT-4. AI research and development should be refocused on making today’s powerful, state-of-the-art systems more accurate, safe, interpretable, transparent, robust, aligned, trustworthy, and loyal. While the AI and robot power wars continue unabated, simple, proven powerful angles demanding attention for proceeding more rationally are notably absent from the call for a pause. Artificial intelligence demands power. How much power? We don’t know, because power consumption is now proprietary information for secretive AI developers. Many of the threats from AI and robots can be significantly reduced by simply living within our energy means, which we need to do anyway. The Earth has an energy imbalance that will equilibrate with or without our planning. Robots and AI can’t survive if we fail to rebalance our energy and resource flows. If we can’t stop burning fossil fuels for our children, how bout we cut back for robots? The Ecosocialist Revolution: A Manifesto brought to our attention last week by NY brit expat has, among conditions for a livable world, an aim of 3.5 kW/person. That can vary with geography for heat, air conditioning and other regionally varying needs, and sustainable levels of consumption vary among power sources and downstream effects. These are debates we can have democratically with open science and data. Nevertheless, the Earth energy imbalance remains to be dealt with. Resources are being used unsustainably across land and sea. We are crossing planetary boundaries of sustainability. If we fail to use resources and energy sustainably, then AI and robots will not threaten or save us. We will self destruct ourselves. If we do live sustainably, perhaps with AI and robotic assistance, then I contend that reductions in resource usage will make AI and robots much more manageable. Beyond burning up resources, while rushing to inundate ourselves with AI and robots, tech giants have long been threatening labor relations. Another simple step to alleviate threats for AI and robots is to have strong labor and human rights laws. Don’t let tech owners bypass regulations meant to protect humans. Those rushing to develop AI and robots now are often doing so in competition. We have enough food and materials for each and every human, but we live with imposed scarcity and division among companies and nations. People might adapt into a world with AI and robots more harmoniously if we ensure that all are fed and housed, and we scale back militarism to where adversaries are not constantly threatening each other with the latest innovations. We need protect human rights, and to expand our consideration of rights and humanity into cyber realms, incorporating bots and AI. Our lives can improve in so many ways with technology, but as we consider having nanobots flowing through our bodies and consuming nanobot delivered sustenance, we need to be aware of who and what we are giving power to.
