Kamala Harris and history rhyming rather than repeating [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-08-03 This is my prediction that Jimmy Carter will be at least somewhat instrumental in Kamala Harris’s 2028 election victory. Read on to learn why…. As a kid, I was a presidential history geek. I would page through World Book Encyclopedia from Jimmy Carter to George Washington and back to Jimmy Carter. Later in life, I became a Wikipedia geek, and I would start pretty much all of the articles about POTUS elections on Wikipedia prior to 2000. I was one of those nerds, who insist on proper citations. There’s a pattern I noticed many years ago, and started seriously sharing online in 2016. I saw that there was a pattern in modern POTUS elections of alternating between "D" (Democrat) and "R" (Republican). Here's the pattern: 1940 to 1980: DDDRRDDRRD 1980 to 2020: RRRDDRRDDR 2020 to 2060: DDDRR.… If my predictions are correct, let’s hope the Republicans are no longer Trump cultists in 2032! Maybe the pattern will break by then... Here’s a few times I wrote about it: “ What Donald Trump and Jimmy Carter have in common ” — this was a Daily Kos story I published in January 2016 when I feared about the 40-year pattern predicted a Republican. My fear was also that people weren’t taking the threat of Donald Trump seriously enough, and were fully behind the Clinton campaign’s “pied piper” strategy. That went well…. — this was a Daily Kos story I published in January 2016 when I feared about the 40-year pattern predicted a Republican. "Jimmy Carter, populism and Donald Trump" — My post on Medium in 2017 which I honed after my Daily Kos stories, I also wrote a much shorter Daily Kos story (“Jimmy Carter, populism and Donald Trump (2017 edition)”) which was a sort of a link-heavy bibliography for my way-too-long Medium post. My post on Medium in 2017 which I honed after my Daily Kos stories, I also wrote a much shorter Daily Kos story (“Jimmy Carter, populism and Donald Trump (2017 edition)”) which was a sort of a link-heavy bibliography for my way-too-long Medium post. “Is the 40-year pattern continuing?”.— This was a Daily Kos story I wrote in 2023, back when it seemed very likely that Biden was going to stay in the race until the November 2024 election. It’s interesting that only 2% of the 213 people who responded to my included 2023 poll thought Biden’s time in office would end in 2025. A full 24% of respondents answered “I don’t know”, even though every year prior to 2030 was offered. It would seem that many folks didn’t want to definitively say Biden would last until the end of his second term, but didn’t want to say that he wouldn’t, either. If the pattern continues, we may have Jimmy Carter to thank. After all, if it’s a close election in Georgia, we may be relying on President Carter making it to his 100th birthday. The thing that many people pointed out to me over the years is that history rhymes, it doesn't repeat. There are some people (like Alan Lichtman) who claim to be able to predict elections using “keys”, and have sold many books doing this. Once one understands the rhyming pattern, one can make many predictions. That doesn’t make them correct, though, and watching Lichtman scramble to retrofit his keys to the patterns of this election would be funny if people weren’t reading his horoscopes. I believe Jen Psaki, who says that anyone who claims that they know what's going to happen in November doesn't know what they're talking about. My pattern/horoscope is not etched in stone. I may knock on a few doors this year, and maybe make a few phone calls on behalf of Democratic Party candidates, since if the pattern doesn’t hold this year, we’re going to need ALL the help we can get downballot.
