It is representative of one of the most baffling and disturbing aspects of the MAGA world: The Deification of Donald Trump. Trump is either seen as Jesus’s BFF or, more appallingly, is depicted as a Christ-like figure himself. I am not exaggerating. I hereby submit the following in evidence: I think this was at a CPAC conference. And what are we, the members of the Satanic Communist Goat Worshiping Mandatory Abortion Party? During his November 21 (2019) interview with [Franklin] Graham, [Eric] Metaxas, a Salem Radio Network talk-show host, asked the son of the late evangelist Billy Graham, “What do you think of what is happening now? I mean, it’s a very bizarre situation to be living in a country where some people seem to exist to undermine the president of the United States. It’s just a bizarre time for most Americans.” Franklin Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelical Association, responded, “Well, I believe it’s almost a demonic power that is trying—” At which point Metaxas interjected, “I would disagree. It’s not almost demonic. You know and I know, at the heart, it’s a spiritual battle.” Then there is the lovely Pastor Greg Locke: You cannot be a Christian and vote Democrat in this nation! They are God-denying demons that butcher babies! Putin-loving, military-hating, racist scumbag Tommy Tuberville chimes in: Democrats are part of “a Satanic cult”. “I’ve traveled all over the country — all 50 states — I’ve been in good places and bad places,” the coach-turned-politician said. “The one thing I saw, we are losing our kids to a Satanic cult.” The GOP lawmaker was apparently quite serious about this, adding, “There’s not one Democrat that can tell you they stand up for God.” This would likely be news to Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock of Georgia, who is quite literally a Christian pastor who “stands up for God” during his weekly sermons. Tuberville concluded at the time that Americans “have never overcome a cult like we’re dealing with right now,” adding that it’s Democrats who are trying to “push this cult on us.” McKay Coppins in The Atlantic analyzed the prayers said at Trump rallies and finds some interesting things out: To understand the evolving psychology and beliefs of Trump’s religious supporters, I attempted to review every prayer offered at his campaign events since he announced in November 2022 that he would run again. Working with a researcher, I compiled 58 in total, the most recent from June 2024. The resulting document—at just over 17,000 words—makes for a strange, revealing religious text: benign in some places, blasphemous in others; contradictory and poignant and frightening and sad and, perhaps most of all, begging for exegesis. There are many ways to parse the text. You could compare the number of times Trump’s name is mentioned (87) versus Jesus Christ’s (61). You could break down the demographics of the people leading the prayers: 45 men and 13 women; overwhelmingly evangelical, with disproportionate representation from Pentecostalism, a charismatic branch of Christianity that emphasizes supernatural faith healing and speaking in tongues. One might also be tempted to catalog the most comically incendiary lines (“Oh Lord, our Lord, we want to be awake and not woke”). But the most interesting way to look at these prayers is to examine the theological motifs that run through them. And the dominant motif is that America is a fallen nation that has broken its “covenant” with God. And how to restore this covenant? Why, make Jesus H. Trump president again!
