Something No One Seems To Have Noticed [1]

It happened again.

No one seems to have noticed it. Perhaps, because it has become so common, that we don’t pay attention anymore.

But, it happened again.

On July 13, 2024, a young man with some serious mental health issues got a gun, and killed someone.

He had had problems for several years. But either nobody noticed, or nobody cared.

He got a gun past security. Then he fired it.

This timethe young man shot at the president, not a bunch of grade school kids, or church ladies, or high school classmates.

This time, only one person was killed.

But it happened again.

Thomas Crooks had been having problems since high school. But no one seems to have tried to help him. His parents either weren’t aware of his issues, or thought he would outgrow them. Teachers and counsellors didn’t help him either.

How many times has it happened before? at Columbine High School, at Virginia Tech, in Uvalde Texas, in a dozen other cities and towns.

It may happen again, next week, or the week after that.

It may happen tomorrow.

It will continue to happen, as long as it is insanely easy for anyone to get a gun.

If Thomas Crooks had come to the rally with a knife or a baseball bat, someone would have stopped him.

If he’d brought a hunting bow to the rally, Trumpers would have knocked him down and sat on him.

Crooks would be alive now, and so would the man he killed.

But he had a gun, an AR15, a holy relic among Republicans. He managed to climb up on a roof, and open fire. Apparently, he wanted to kill the president, before being killed himself. He managed to accomplish the latter.

Next week, or the week after or the week after that, another young man will take yet another gun, and go on yet another shooting spree. More people will be killed. It will be on the news. More thoughts and prayers will be offered. But no one will do anything to keep it from happening again and again and again.
