Congratulations, we made it through another week, and in doing so, you have landed here with me, for a Saturday Morning Rabbit-Hole. When I was growing up, History was one of my favorite subjects. I blame both of my parents. My dad for showing me an endless parade of spaghetti westerns and war movies at a formitable age, and my mother for turning me into a conspiracy nut quite early in life. So when I was challenged to focus on History, and Historical fiction for a month, my response of course was. “Challenge Accepted!” I have virtual shelves full of histories, and biographies on historical figures. My first instinct was to dive down the usual JFK Rabbit-Hole, that is after all, my standby, but then, a couple of books on my library’s hold list dropped into my lap. I started with Michael Wallis’s Billy The Kid:The Endless Ride. This book was new to me, though the story it tells was not. Billy and his Regulators were some of my favorite historical figures, partially because of the mystery surrounding Billy’s death. Not familiar with what I mean? Look up the story of Brushy Bill Roberts. In the late 1940’s, Brushy Bill gained a flash of fame by claiming to be the famous outlaw William H. Bonney, otherwise known as William Antrim, AkA William McCarty, or more famously, Billy The Kid. Bill Roberts spun a fantastic tale that later inspired the Young Guns films staring Emilio Esteves and Lou Diamond Phillips. Why do I think there is even the slightest chance that Brushy Bill was telling the truth despite a mass amount of evidence to the contrary? Two main reasons, neither of which that have much to do with Roberts himself. First, Patrick Floyd Garret was a liar and a scoundrel, as detailed in Mark Lee Gardner’s book To Hell on a Fast Horse. Despite Gardner’s attempt to paint Garret in a flattering light, he cannot resist detailing the legal troubles the man got himself into both before and after his fated run in with Billy the Kid. So it would not surprise me if Garret in truth, made a deal with The Kid, and let him fade off into anonymity. The second reason? I told you from the beginning, I am a Conspiracy Theorist from -way back-. I am wired to believe that there is always something more that we don’t know, something hidden, something secret. To quote the famous if fictional FBI agent, “I Want to Believe.” Audible Links: Billy the Kid: The Endless Ride To Hell on a Fast Horse [END] --- [1] Url: https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/7/26/2253240/-07-27-2024-IAN-Going-down-the-Rabbit-hole-of-History-with-W-H-Antrim-and-Pat-Garrett?pm_campaign=front_page&pm_source=latest_community&pm_medium=web Published and (C) by Daily Kos Content appears here under this condition or license: Site content may be used for any purpose without permission unless otherwise specified. via Magical.Fish Gopher News Feeds: gopher://magical.fish/1/feeds/news/dailykos/
