Unable to sleep much last night I gamed out how President Biden played Mr. Trump.

I think Joe realized his options were closing when the big donors dried up, but he wasn’t about to admit it publicly. Being a wise politician, he kept his options open while also looking at the reality of his shrinking chances.

When Trump locked in J.D. Vance at the RNC the clock began ticking. Working with VP Harris and a small number of advisors the Biden — Harris team put together a timeline, with Sunday being the target of the announcement. Initial ads were plotted and the VP continued her schedule of rallies and gatherings.

Covid was a curve at first, but then became a convenient cover for the President remaining in Delaware.

Making the announcement on Sunday completely captured the news cycle and threw off Trump’s attack game plan. The instant explosion of donations, large and small confirmed the move and the avalanche of endorsements sealed it.

At 3 AM it made sense.
