Dems Are Lining Up Behind Harris [Update: Not Joe Manchin] [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-07-21 Now that President Biden has stepped away from the race and endorsed VP Harris as his favorite to succeed him, I’m seeing even more comments and diaries here about how the powers that pushed Biden out are doing the same thing to Harris, that the fix is in, the takeover is on the move, the Democratic oligarchs are as bad as the Republican ones. I have a short message for all of this: To reassure you, here are a few stories collected by Political Wire in the past hour or so: Wall Street money machine whirs back to life for Harris Wall Street’s Democrats are lining up behind Kamala Harris with a mixture of relief and genuine enthusiasm for a politician many of them supported in 2020. Finance executives’ money and convening power between now and the Democratic convention will be key to Harris’ plans to “earn and win” her party’s nomination. Several donors said Sunday they were prepared to break out checkbooks that had sat untouched since Joe Biden’s debate performance. Among those expected to aid Harris’ bid for the nomination are Centerview’s Blair Effron, Blackstone’s Jonathan Gray, Lazard’s Peter Orszag and Ray McGuire, Paul Weiss’ Brad Karp, and Evercore’s Roger Altman. “100% in,” one donor said Sunday afternoon. DNC members are organizing a letter backing Kamala Harris Members of the Democratic National Committee are circulating a letter urging delegates to support Kamala Harris as the party’s nominee for president at their national convention, according to a letter obtained by Semafor. “We are well aware of the historical significance of this moment. We respect, appreciate, and are grateful to President Biden for all that he has done and continues to do for our country and the world. We respectfully urge delegates to the 2024 Democratic National Convention, and all voters in November to support Kamala Harris for President of the United States,” the letter reads. Organizers are still gathering signatures, but it has already been signed by at least 60 current and former DNC members throughout the country and describes Harris as the “strongest candidate for President” who can “best offer a clear, unifying vision for the future” and the story concludes: If a potential challenger wants to create the impression that her nomination isn’t settled business, they’re going to have to move very fast. There are no signs that anyone is doing so: The Democrats Floated as Alternatives to Harris Are Keeping Their Plans Quiet although the story did mention that Maryland Gov. Wes Moore will endorse Harris on Monday, a source with knowledge of the situation told NOTUS. Since that story was posted, this has come out: Josh Shapiro endorses Harris for president Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro has endorsed Harris for president, saying that she is "the best path forward for the Democratic Party is to quickly unite behind Vice President Harris and refocus on winning the presidency." Shapiro's name had been floated as a potential replacement for Biden on the ticket, and a potential running mate for whoever nabs the nomination. Expect others to follow soon. Geez, people, it’s only been a few hours! Though Bill and Hillary Clinton didn’t waste any time (I expect they knew this was coming): Bill, Hillary Clinton endorse Kamala Harris for Democratic nomination. And Harris isn’t waiting around: Scoop: Harris works the phones, trying to lock down nomination No, it’s not in the bag — yet. But Harris is moving to make it so, and no one has yet come forward to challenge her. Given the ego that’s required to be in politics, you would think there would be people leaping at the chance. But so far it looks like Harris is out in front and has got this. I gotta add one separate thought: Trump and his minions wasted no time in attacking Harris for, among other things, concealing Biden’s condition from the American people. This will become the new definition of chutzpah — from a crowd that has done everything it can to hide from us Trump’s deterioration, his incomprehensibility, his lack of focus, his lack of competence, his lack of basic humanity. THEY are the ones trying to hide the facts about their nominee. That’s the way to defeat him. Don’t waste time defending against his gish gallops. Attack.Attack. Attack. And stop blaming the media and the money boys for what they may have done to help push Biden out. Time enough for that after President Harris is sworn in on Jan 20, 2025.
