Embarrassing GOP fluffing pieces in Washington Post [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-07-17 Last week I cancelled my Washington Post subscription out of complete frustration with their constant pro-Trump/GOP and anti-Biden/Dem coverage. But its an annual subscription that doesn’t end until the end of Sept., so until them I continue to observe the amazing depths to which the paper has sunk in terms of no longer being able to provide legitimate, unbiased and professional political news coverage. Two recent meaningless GOP fluffing pieces in WaPo have helped confirm that I made a good decision to cancel my subscription. First up, now that J.D. Vance has been named at Trump’s VP, there is a lot that you’d think a legitimate news organization would want to cover in terms of Vance’s policy positions, political views, personal history, etc. But no, the Washington Post is obsessed with Vance’s beard. No, seriously. WaPo decided it was worth devoting a writer’s time and column inches to pointing out that Vance would be the first vice presidential candidate to have facial hair since 1932. With all the serious problems facing our country right now, THIS is what’s on the mind of the Washington Post. Really? Really? The article actually declared, which a straight face, that it was a “big step for the United States” to have a vice presidential candidate with facial hair. Vance, the nation’s first millennial major party nominee, managed to also break the “beard barrier,” or the long-held norm of only clean-shaven politicians vying for the highest office in the land. And, for the record, Trump told Fox News Radio he thinks his running mate looks good with a beard — “like a young Abraham Lincoln.” Yes, we’ve all been worried about the “beard barrier,” haven’t we? Forget about breaking barriers by naming candidates of color, women candidates, LGBTQ+ candidates, etc. No, no no. We can all cheer that the GOP has finally — finally! — broken the beard barrier after a decades-long drought. What worthless, sexist drivel. Next up, we have a super-fluffy opinion piece about Melania Trump, entitled “The power of Melania,” which was written by Mary Jordan, an associate editor at WaPo. Jordan proclaims, again with a straight face, that the complete absence of Melania from the presidential campaign or, um, from Donald Trump’s life — she wasn’t at his criminal trial, she’s not on the campaign trail, she’s not speaking at the RNC (unlike all recent past spouses), she wasn’t at the debate, she wasn’t even at the hospital when her husband was being treated for his ear wound — is actually a sign of her immense power. Really? I mean, really? Do tell Mary Jordan. Melania knows what she is doing and does what she wants. She doesn’t like public speaking. She is a loner. And she is savvy, fully aware that if she speaks rarely, people will listen more closely. And if she stays in the shadows, she will draw more attention when she steps into the spotlight. Except that Melania never speaks about anything, really. Jordan tries to explain away that unlike any other normal couple, you never seen them holding hands or looking affectionately at each other, and there’s that vid of Melania swatting way Trump’s hand when he tried to hold her hand. But according to Jordan, that’s all perfectly fine.
