IS THERE A NET GAIN WITH HARRIS AT THE TOP OF THE TICKET?

Dems need to think carefully and strategically about the political implications of dumping Biden and putting Harris at the top of the ticket.

Arguably Harris would have some benefit in terms of motivating blacks and women to vote, although given the Republican attack on reproductive rights, motivation amongst women should already be very high. And frankly, Biden should also have good support amongst blacks, given his strong record at appointing blacks and other minorities to key executive and judicial positions.

However, in terms of net effects on voting, there are several other important dimensions to consider.

First, let’s be honest, having Harris at the top of the ticket would also further motivate the racists and sexists in the country to turn out to vote Republican. Would that be a lesser, equal or greater effect on turnout than Harris’ positive effects on women and blacks?

But perhaps more importantly in terms of net effects is the fact that Biden has important credentials and relatively strong support (for a Democrat) amongst several other key demographic groups: seniors, veterans, and union members. Harris has no particular assets amongst any of those groups, and losing Biden could certainly have some adverse effects there. Perhaps a VP pick could help with some of those, but Democrats need to fully consider all of the potential effects of dumping Biden and replacing him with Harris.

This election is too damn important to make a hasty decision.
