I Was Not Reassured [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-07-05 Look, I want Biden to succeed. And like everyone here, I’m terrified of Trump, Project 2025, the Christian Nationalists, and the rest of the unholy cabal that’s assembled with knives out ready to carve up the carcass of our great country (and planet, while we’re at it). But I watched President Biden in the interview with Stephanopoulos and came away with the impression that he is going to lose to Trump. As interviews go, it wasn’t a bad one. I couldn’t understand everything Biden said, but my ears have never worked right anyway. But he knew he couldn’t just give a “not bad” or even “decent” interview. This was his last chance to convince the American people that he has the stamina to run the country for the next 4 years. I came away convinced the job will kill him first. (I would say the same thing about Trump, except he has never done the job, never cared about doing the job, spent all his time watching Fox and cheating at golf instead of doing the job. He could keel over any day from his eating habits and lack of exercise, but not from the stress of being president.) The presidency ages everyone who puts real work into it (which may exclude some of the XIX century presidents, but includes every other president except the last one). The presidency in this current age of nuclear threats, climate change, uberhyperpartisanship, overpopulation, growth of authoritarian countries, is a killing job. No wonder Biden is worn out. That’s what I saw in the interview. Yes, he was more on his game, yes, he was able (mostly) to make his points (though he dodged a couple of serious questions). But I just felt it wasn’t good enough. YMMV.
