[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-25 Is Bergum the best possible choice for our side? By that I mean the 70pct of the American people who believe in Democracy and are not MAGA. 1) Bergum brings no new demographics or states to the ticket. He’s Governor of a state Trump will win by 30, surrounded mostly by states Trump will win by 30. I doubt Bergum moves any votes in Minnesota. A choice of Scott or Rubio could have introduced a layer of uncertainty as to their impact. 2) Bergum may be a closet decent person. Famously while in college at Stanford (more on this) he started a chimney sweeping business. Despite being born into some wealth, he’s actually worked. Likewise, he was at Microsoft and is BFFs with Steve Ballmer, who while not a raging lefty, has given to Democrats and left of center causes. He also went to school at Stanford — so he has been exposed to actual ideas. Reportedly he used to have more moderate political positions and is not a Mike Pence born again. He appears to be more of a Rubio-style late convert. As Governor, he has sucked up to the fossil fuel interests but at least states a goal of being carbon neutral. 3) He may actually be smart. Given his business dealings and history, unlike Trump he seems to be a legit Tech Businesspersron with some deeper knowledge of how things work and at least some respect for the scientific process. 4) Would he be (low bar) the best possible President of Trump’s choices? Trump is old. Trump is likely to be impeached. Trump may not for various reasons survive the 4 years. Despite his making the right decision on Jan 6, a President Pence would have been a disaster. I’m not saying Bergum is a David Souter, but he very well could, as President, govern more closely like a HW Bush than a Trump. And of the 4 — Vance, Rubio and Scott scare me (especially Vance) a lot more than Doug. 5) Would he be the nominee in 2028? Even when the ticket is defeated, he will have a leg up on 2028. There are a lot of worse Republicans.
