RIP Willie Mays [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-18 Considered by many to have been the greatest baseball player of all time, Willie Mays has died at age 93. Mays finished his storied career with 3,293 hits and 660 home runs, which were 8th and 3rd in MLB history at the time of his retirement. Mays burst onto the MLB scene in 1951 by winning the Rookie of the Year Award. Three seasons later he was the National League Most Valuable Player and led his Giants (then playing in New York) to the 1954 World Series Championship. He will forever be remembered for his tremendous catch of a fly ball to deep center field late in Game 1 of that series against the heavily favored Cleveland Indians. That play is now simply known among baseball fans as The Catch. The Giants would go on to win that game and the series. Though this was his most memorable play, Mays’ career would extend for nearly two more decades thereafter. He finally retired after having returned to the World Series in the 1973 season as a member of the New York Mets. Mays is one of the players I wish I had been able to see play in person. RIP Willie, maybe the GOAT.
