Renewable Friday: The Rest of the News [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-06-14 I have started a campaign in Renewable Tuesdays to cover all of the major slices in Carbon’s Death of a Billion Cuts, and what slices governments and citizens can cut off. This Friday series is taking over the rest of the climate news, within the limitations of DK stories. Some things that used to be big deals are now too small for regular coverage. First, the big picture. We are at Peak Carbon and Peak Pollution, but not at Peak Global Warming. That will continue until we reduce our carbon output significantly. Global Cooling cannot begin until we get well past Net Zero, and take more than a teraton of CO 2 out of the air and water. How do we do that? One slice at a time, billions of us. x Unthinkable just a few years ago: For the first time renewables (wind, solar, hydro) produced more EU electricity than fossil fuels in 2023. 2/3 of EU electricity is from non-fossil fuel generation. Source @EmberClimate pic.twitter.com/Gdk1Cbg4WB — Jan Rosenow (@janrosenow) June 13, 2024 x Good morning with good news: US solar generation jumped 25.5% in March 2024, compared to March 2023! US coal generation fell 23.4% in March 2024, compared to March 2023! Coal dropped to just 11.8% of USA's electricity. At the same time, supply is set to surge. Read more on the implications for markets worldwide 👇 https://t.co/w3isyyRBWK — International Energy Agency (@IEA) June 12, 2024 The basic law of supply and demand tells us that this overhang, which will soon reach 8 million bbl/day, will drastically reduce market prices, leaving only the lowest-cost producers standing. Oil will still be needed as a chemical feedstock except for products that can be replaced in some way, like single-use plastic packaging. x IEA says peaking oil demand creates an amount of global excess oil production capacity only seen in 2020 Pandemic.
