RIP Morgan Spurlock, Documentary Filmmaker Behind "Super Size Me" [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-05-24 Morgan Spurlock, the Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker most famous for his 2004 movie “Super Size Me”, has died from complications due to cancer at the age of 53. Spurlock was born in West Virginia but dreamed of making movies and television shows. He followed his dream by attending New York University’s Tish School for the Arts and graduating with a degree in film making. He started his professional career working on various television projects but gained fame and notoriety in 2004 when he released the documentary Super Size Me, which chronicled himself eating three meals a day at McDonalds for 30 days straight. During that period, he gained 25 pounds, developed gastrointestinal issues, and even suffered sexual dysfunction. The movie gained him an Oscar nomination for best documentary film, but more importantly it caused McDonalds to drop super size options from its menu due to the controversy and the negative reception from its customers. He would go on to make more documentary movies like Where In the World Is Osama Bin Laden? as well as TV shows 30 Days which was broadcast on FX and Morgan Spurlock: Inside Man on CNN. However, he would be criticized for his Super Size Me documentary, as some critics reproduced his diet with other volunteers and noticed that most of them did not experience the same dramatic medical issues in the film. Others noted that he also had not disclosed his near lifelong addiction to alcohol, why may have exacerbated his condition. But his most damning criticism came in 2017 in the wake of the MeToo movement when he posted on his blog “I’m part of the problem” where he admitted not only to being unfaithful to his three wives but also being accused of sexual assault while in college. Whatever you may think of his most famous documentary, in light of the most recent price gouging by the fast food restaurant industry, it’s probably not a good idea to be consuming large or frequent amounts of highly processed fast food with it’s high, fat, sodium, and high fructose corn syrup content.
