Kitchen Table Kibitzing May 12, 2024 [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-05-12 Home As we age, and our circumstances change, our habitat needs and desires change as well. According to research by AARP , 76 percent of seniors (adults age 50 and over) say they want to remain in their homes for as long as possible, and 77 percent would like to stay in their current community. Some surveys have put the figure of those who want to “age in place” even higher — at nearly 90 percent. Financial situations, of course, will be instrumental in any decisions….and choices. The same AARP survey noted that about one-third of respondents said their current home would need “major modifications” in order to accommodate their changing needs as they age. A recent article covered some of these modification choices. One California couple spent $115,000 to retrofit their house. The typical bathroom renovation in California costs $45,000 to $75.000, per the article Many of the modifications are directed to potential requirements for future aging, such a ramps and wider doorways for wheelchair access. Another consideration supersedes the desire to stay in one’s home: how will it be maintained as the residents age? This hits home for us as well as many of our friends. Remaining in one’s home as long as possible has some special benefits, such as community and neighborhood familiarity, and continuity. We are fortunate in that we set things up at a condo where much of the maintenance falls upon the HOA. We did the improvements necessary for present times, and in the future, if we can't get up the stairs, we can live OK on one floor. Are you comfortable facing aging where you now live? Would you rather move? Any plans for that? What modifications would be necessary or desirable to let you remain where you live? Do you think you’ll have to move to some sort of senior living facility?
