Cancer and Trump [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-04-13 One of my best friends and I frequent the farmers’ market on weekends. The third pea in this pod is suffering from pancreatic cancer. We wait for miracle drugs that are coming, but likely not soon enough. Our political ranting is more subdued these days, and we try to keep it ‘in the moment’, focused on today and what it brings. With the elections looming we are consumed with fear, but it is not what keeps us up at night, at least not all night. As young boomers, we work, volunteer, exercise, dance whenever possible, have dinner parties, and discuss health a lot. Our liberal upbringing, with two foreigners and one born in Berkeley, California, drives us to keep fighting the good feminist fight, keep and take back our rights, and support policies that benefit the less fortunate children and old people that can’t fight for themselves. Just a couple of years ago, we envisioned ourselves getting old together, maybe living in a commune together, and we even assigned roles to make expectations clear. One would do the gardening and cooking, the other and the men the cleaning, and the third one would be the one that empathize for all of us, carrying the emotional work with gusto. She’s the one with cancer. We are trying to fill her shoes. It’s hard. Now we fear death and the end of Democracy all at once. Getting religion and praying to the invisible man in the sky to keep doom from happening, crosses our minds more frequently these days. Those of us that came to America escaping dictatorships and oppressive regimes are suffering from an onset of PTSD. And the one American that hasn’t experienced it is there for us, but not for long, rooting for a better outcome. Invisible man in the sky: one of us deserves to be heard. Let it not be Trump. Amid all the political noise, life and death is still happening. Hope still happens. Love your loved ones!
