Street Prophets Friday: Learning Stuff in the Museum [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-04-12 Welcome to another chapter in the saga that is my visit to the National Agricultural Museum in Prague. I think we'll squeeze one more diary out of it after this, but I may save that for a rainy day. Once we get this open thread opened, I hope you'll join in and let me know how things are in your corner of the globe. Lilacs are in full bloom here. The trees are going wild with foliage. Last Sunday, for the first time in my life, I looked through a telescope at the Sun. Maybe next week I'll get caught up on all that with you, but for now— more of that museum. I learned stuff. As befits a museum of agriculture, there was a large section of the museum dedicated to the history of agriculture. Back to the prehistoric origins of domestication A few tools for hog butchering That lid on the sauerkraut jar is fantastic— complete with a little built-in moat to keep the bugs out! I've got to try making one of those. Cheese and butter making I have a sharpening stone for our scythe like the one in the holder on the right— I'd never seen one with a handle! I'll have to try to make one of those too ... Cow shoes? Tell me you’d already seen cow shoes. I grew up in Wisconsin— not a cow shoe in sight the whole time. There was a great section about water— can’t have agriculture without it. Again, so many gaps in my education. You’d think some cheese-head patriot teacher of mine would have mentioned this. A neat little digital film loop / bird's eye view of a stream full of fish was projected on the floor Czech fish ponds support more than just fish A technique for harmlessly removing eggs from sturgeon for caviar! Will wonders never cease? Haven't tasted much caviar since I was a kid— wonder if I'd like it now. Forests are important too. Okay, I want to make special owl houses now. Not tempted by the squirrel house. The overall percentage of land covered by woodlands in the Czech Republic is growing! Currently at over a third of the country! Thanks for stopping by! This is an open thread.
