More remembering Rachel Corrie and others [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-03-16 A story about Rachel Corrie appeared here earlier today, the anniversary of her death, in defense of Palestinians. There is also an excellent video regarding how much we all should be able to live with each other with grace and charm rather than fear and hate. If you have not looked at what coolspring posted to honor Rachel, go here https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/3/16/2229780/-In-Memory-of-Rachel-Corrie-April-10-1979-March-16-2003?pm_campaign=front_page&pm_source=more_community&pm_medium=web For more details, have a read here : ‘Everybody’s fight’: Palestinians hail the sacrifice of Corrie, Bushnell https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/3/16/everybodys-fight-palestinians-hail-the-sacrifice-of-corrie-bushnell What stands out to me, beyond the gruesome details of the murder of Rachel, are many. For one, the Palestinians still remember, revere, and honor Rachel every year. Naming a street in her name puts her at a level of true valor. And it goes on. Al Jazeera reminds us of Aaron Bushnell who self-immolated himself a short time ago. Another street named for an American death in the name of Palestine. And, according to Al Jazeera, both of them have been ridiculed by some. Yet this is what really got me. “People of colour cite a tradition of white allies risking everything to help them.” is right under the headline and discussed in detail toward the end of the article. John Brown is mentioned. But then this : “Viola Liuzzo, a white Detroit housewife who was killed while shuttling African American volunteers registering voters in Selma Alabama – was called a “whore” by some whites and the late director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, J Edgar Hoover, said that she was having sex with her Black passenger when she was killed. “ Some of her last words were, “This is everybody’s fight.” I assume we all know how ridiculously disgusting Hoover was. And Hamas is worse. But Rachel and Aaron and Viola, and of course many more, still offer me hope that there is enough goodness in some members of this species that their “risk of everything” may indeed save us all from each other. This is indeed everybody’s fight…for right.
