General Milley Against the Dictator Wannabe Named Trump [1]

This morning I studied General Mark Milley.

He will have a section in my 2024 election book.

He was appointed Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff by Trump and gradually came to view the ideas and behavior of the president with concern and horror.

After the violent attack by the Trump administration on peaceful protestors in Lafayette Square in June 2020 General Milley worked on a resignation letter which included these lines:

“Between 1914 and 1945, 150 million people were slaughtered in the conduct of war.

They were slaughtered because of tyrannies and dictatorships.

That generation, like every generation, has fought against that, has fought against fascism, has fought against Nazism, has fought against extremism.

It’s now obvious to me that you don’t understand that world order.

You don’t understand what the war was all about.

In fact, you subscribe to many of the principles that we fought against.”

General Mark Milley learned that Trump actually supported the authoritarian principles that America fought against through most of the 20th century.

He decided not to resign.

He decided to stay and try to limit the damage that might be done by a rogue president.

I am happy for that.
