Ukraine needs vast numbers of anti-radiation loitering munitions [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-03-11 Ukraine is planning to manufacture 1+ million drones in 2024. That said, Ukraine needs the right type of drones. There’s not much point building a million or more drones if they’re all going to be thwarted by Russian electronic warfare. Anti-radiation loitering munitions make a lot of sense since they can be used against SAM radars, SHORAD radars, counter-battery radars and even ship radars. I’ve also read that anti-radiation loitering munitions can be used against EW systems. And because anti-radiation loitering munitions home in on radar emissions (and apparently EW emissions too), they don’t require a human operator to guide them to their target, so no (jammable) datalink is required. These loitering munitions could be sent out (ideally in large numbers) to loiter, detect targets, and then take them out — Russian EW would be totally ineffective. Plus anti-radiation drones that additionally have EO/IR sensors can also look for and ideally take out SAM launchers and SAM command trucks in addition to SAM radars. They can also look for artillery pieces near counter-battery radars. Ukraine could possibly get KUS-SX loitering munitions from South Korea and Chien Hsiang munitions from Taiwan. In exchange Ukraine could possibly supply Sea Baby and Magura V5 USVs. Or else the west could buy these munitions and supply them to Ukraine.
