This is a shameless export of a comment I just left on AKALib’s diary about new campaign ads for the Biden-Harris 2024 Campaign.

I thought I was being snarky, then I gave it a listen, then I sang along, then I thought, well shoot, this isn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

And it does have sass, oh yes. This thing STRUTS.

So I am shamelessly posting it in diary form. Apologies for the repetition, but anyone who likes jazz classics is in for a treat — despite the really truly un-evolved lyrics of the original.

It’s vintage — Quincy Jones, from 1969. And I bet Joe will remember it if he hears it, because it was a pretty big hit for a while back then. JAZZ, and it was a hit. Hell, I remember it, I was 14 and already a jazz nut…

The lyrics, alas, really are unfortunate, because they reflect the era, and it wasn’t very evolved yet. But that’s not a problem — I always rewrite them anyway, and there ain’t many.

So here we go. I bring you:

Aaaaand now the music. Real musicians. No autotune. A freakin’ Big Band in the late sixties. Takes a while to get to the lyrics, such as they are; they start around 3:15, so enjoy the musicians in the meantime, this is a really fine remaster :-)

[I do recommend clicking through to YouTube on this and reading the video’s “liner notes”. They’re remarkable. Toots Thielemans is on guitar, for one thing.]
