Before talking to MAGA voters, give them this site and tell them to refute it all. #Donald Trump [1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-03-08 #Donald Trump First of all, let’s give credit where it is due. I didn’t “write” this. Many people, websites magazines, newspapers and other entities created there list. I tried to give as much citation credit as possible, but I am sure I missed some. My apolgies. I “write” this article with a dual attempt to be amusing and farcical during our most perilous election in American history, while also being wishful in thinking that if an overwhelming avalanche of evidence comes crashing down on some voters, it will persuade them to change their vote (or at least not vote for Trump). I am not really that optimistic about the latter. I will attempt to organize this massive list by general content. I will also be using as many creative techniques to get to 2,024 reasons as possible. Despite being the worst President in US history as determined several times by historicans and political scientists on several occasions (and anyone else with a half a brain) , quickly identifying that many specifics was challenging. In doing so, it loses the idea of some of these reasons being really important over others, but if 2,024 reasons don’t do the trick, nothing will. I thank and try to give proper credit to all those who made list from which I borrowed. I also note that I may have repeated a few. Keeping track of 2,024 is hard work. IF someone needs to read from a single source, I highly recommend Malcolm Nance as the smartest, most insightful man regarding foreign policy and military matters. So here goes His family His own niece, Mary Trump, has spent the last decade trying to clinically tell us that her Uncle Donald, is a sociopathic narcissist. My own brother, a psychologist, has been telling me the same thing. Now you may think of this as a typical family squabble caused by internal family dynamics but the lady has a PhD. While I am sure there were some dynamics at the outset (Maybe not attending her father’s funeral…You know, your own brother’s funeral) but this is different. Trumps own sister, recently deceased, and a retired federal judge called Trump a liar, cruel, ignorant (Doesn’t read) and made the accusation that Trump paid someone to take the SATs for him. Now we all may have a few tidbits of scandal on siblings that we don’t make public, this does far beyond the norm. Donald Jr- The story goes that junior was intending to go to a Yankee game with his father while in college and dressed in a Yankee jersey. Donald Sr. saw this and smacked his college aged son, in front of friends and classmates, and told him to change into a suit and tie. While I am sure many Presidents have not been father of the year material, this may take the cake. Ivanka- I am 67 years old and have met thousands of dads and fathers. I have never once, heard any of them talk about dating their daughters or describing them by their chest size or how good their legs and backside looked or hinted about having sex with their daughter. Not sure when the GOP didn’t find this a deal breaker but that is a common them thrughout theis list…. He cheated on his first wife, Ivana, with his second wife, Marla He cheated on his second wife, Marla, with his third wife, Melania He cheated on his third wife, Melania, with a porn star. He paid said porn star, $30,000 to remain silent He paid the aforementioned money right before the election. He buried his first wife on his golf course for a tax break on his property. His first wife once accused Trump of raping her (and then retracted) Despite railing against “chain-family migration”, Trump assisted in getting Melania’s parents US citizenship. Melania was illegally working in the U.S, making her an undocumented immigrant. Melania became a US citizen by way of the visa granted to those with “extraordinary ability" and "sustained national and international acclaim”. Being a model and future trophy wife isn’t that. Ivanka and her husband, Jared made $640 million dollars while working in the White House. In recent political history, the only President to hire family members to work in the White House was John F. Kennedy, who hired brother, Bobby, as Attorney General. He had to be approved by the US Senate. Trump hired both Ivanka and Jared to be employed in the White House Jared’s original security clearance to work in the White House was not approved. Trump overruled this and had his chief of staff grant him one. His aforementioned, son in law, Jared, has a father who went to prison for tax evasion, illegal campaign contributions, and witness tampering. Trump later pardoned Jared’s father. Donald Jr. has been divorced Donald’s brother’s each were separated or divorced. Trump’s sister was divorced. Trumps father was investigated for racial discrimination in his housing units Trump’s father was arrested at a KKK rally in 1927 but never formally charged. Trump’s father gave Trump an illegal loan to keep his casino afloat. Trump’s sister, the federal judge, resigned amidst an ethics scandal. Ivanka’s company got 18 trademarks from China that were fast tracked. Jared Kushner’s firm got two billion dollars investment sum from Saudi Arabia Trump and his attorneys have promised to sue any teacher or official of any school for releasing any information about Trumps grades. Trump claimed to have graduated first in his class. He did not, since he was listed on any lists of academic honors, which were at least 3.4 and above One of Trumps professors, William Kelley (now deceased) called Trump, the “dumbest student I ever had” The ghost writer for the book. “Art of the Deal” has stated the Trump has a very limited vocabulary. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin called Trump an idiot Trump’s Chief of Staff Reince Priebus called Trump an idiot Trump’s chief economic advisor, Gary Cohn, said that Trump was “dumb as shit,” Trump’s Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, called Trump a “moron.” Melania left the White House with the worst popular approval rating for First Ladies. Melania “I’m working my ass off on the Christmas stuff, that you know, who gives a fuck about the Christmas stuff and decorations?” Melania’s jacket “I really Don’t Care- Do You?” Trump claims his father left him “only” one million dollars to begin his fortune. This is false. Trump’s father left him millions when he died and invested in most of his early ventures Trump’s sister Maryanne (the federal judge) died recently, she noted in her wishes that she did not want Donald to speak at her service because at their father’s funeral, Trump talked about himself. Trump held a funeral service for his brother at the White House. No, really. Trump and his family were not invited to attend the funeral of Senator John McCain. President Obama and President Biden gave eulogies. Melania posed for nude and semi-nude photos as a model Donald Jr. met with the Russians during the 2016 campaign Sexual Assaults Jessica Leeds says Trump groped her on an airplane in the 1970s Rachel Crooks accused Trump of groping her on an airplane in the 1970s Kristen Anderson accused Trump of groping her up her skirt in the 1990s Jill Harth accused Trump of groping her and trying to kiss her at Mara Lago in 1992. Jennifer Murphy accused Trump of an unwelcomed kiss when she was a contestant on the Apprentice, as she was being walked to an elevator by Trump Adult film star Jessica Drake accused Trump of kissing her and two other women in his hotel rom during a golk tournament. ((ABC News Sept 18, 2020) The following items are from PBS’s travel authority Rick Steves in a Facebook post from 2020. As a world traveler, Rick gets to see how other first-world nations work and function. While I freely share my political opinions on this page, I’ve tried to stick to issues and have not explicitly supported one candidate…until now. Today, I'm voicing my support for Joe Biden. My politics are pretty clear. I have a European-style appreciation for good governance, and I see government as a way for a citizenry to work together for the collective good. Americans are often told there are two choices: big, bad government or good, small government. But Europe has taught me that there's a third option: big, good government. I love capitalism (and I’m pretty good at it). And I believe capitalism needs a chaperone, in the form of thoughtful regulation that protects the rights of individuals from the priorities of corporations. I believe education and health care are as important as our military when it comes to budget priorities to make us safe and strong. I also understand that, as a country, even in good times, we will always have people on the left and on the right when it comes to debating the role of government. And I believe that the only way to govern effectively is to respect those differences and find workable compromises. I miss a Republican Party that I can respect. (I voted for Ronald Reagan in 1980.) While I’m a liberal, I love sparring with (and learning from) a principled conservative. For me, the greatness and strength of our country and our democracy is possible only with real, independent journalism and strong governmental institutions led by caring, committed, non-partisan public servants. But Trump has identified those very pillars of American life — what he calls "fake news" and the "deep state" — as his worst enemies. As a traveler and a student of history, I've seen how strong societies can fray. And I fear for our democracy. It’s more fragile than we realize. And it is at risk. That's why, this year, I believe our choice is more fundamental than partisanship. Eight years ago, Donald Trump pledged to "Make America Great Again." When I survey our national life today, it's clear to me that we've lost so much more than we've gained in that time. The following are Republicans and/or conservatives. They each have their own reasons, but suffice to say that Trump alienated them to such an extent that they chose to vote for Biden or not to vote for Trump. The intent is simply to demonstrate how far off the conservative norms Trump went as President George Will. Conservative pundit Colin Powell, General Steve Scaramucci, Trump Press Secretary Steve Schmidt, John McCain’s Campaign Manager George Bush, Republican President Jeb Bush, Republican Governor of Florida Mrs. Cindy McCain. Widow of Senator John McCain Sen. Jeff Flake, retired GOP Senator from AZ Rep. And once again, they were all Republicans. These are lawyers who represented the US government in some capacity. Trumps cabinet. The worst President in US History had a subpar cabinet. They either turned on him or stayed loyal until he lost. They and their positions are listed below with either quotes against Trump or bad things they did while holding the position. 529- Rex Tillerson Sec of State- “Trump is a moron” 530- Mike Pompeo – (On Fox and Friends) “Trump had classified docs when he shouldn’t have had them, and when given the opportunity to return them, he chose not to do that”. Then explaining the gravity of that misdeed, he continued: “That’s inconsistent with protecting America’s soldiers, sailors, airmen and Marines ... if these allegations are true, some of these were pretty serious, important documents.” 531- Steven Mnuchin. Sec of Treasury. Was allegedly the person who was interested in the idea of using the 25th Amendment to remove Trump at the end of his term. 532- Jim Mattis Sec of Defense –“Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people—does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us,” Mattis writes. “We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society. This will not be easy, as the past few days have shown, but we owe it to our fellow citizens; to past generations that bled to defend our promise; and to our children.” 533- Chris Miller Sec of Defense- “He wants to fire most of the generals at the Pentagon, slash defense spending by half, shut down the military academies, break up the military-industrial complex, and he describes the invasion of Iraq as an unjust war based on lies.” And by the way, s in charge of the National Guard that the Capital Police were requesting for help on Jan 6th, but he didn’t send the until 330 PM. Ooops. Pretty bad for 73 days in office. 534-Jeffrey Rosen. Attorney General (for the last month)- I will give this guy a small bit of credit in that he kept Trump and his idiots at bay when asking the DOJ to investigate his idiot claims of voter fraud. That being said, he didn’t publicly repudiate this while in office 535- David Bernhardt Dec of Interior- Wrote a book on how to dismantle the “deep state”…. 536- Sonny Perdue- Sec of Agriculture. Ran an inefficient department in charge of American food supply during the pandemic, causing delay and hunger while Americans became sick and unemployed. His name should ring a bell as a large business owner. 537- Wilbur Ross Sec of Commerce- As secretary he tried to push Trump’s citizenship question on the Census that was shot down by the Supreme Court. Had a stake in a company that provided shipping to Putin’s son in law. And he helped Trump avoid accountability in his Atlantic City business failings. 538- Eugene Scalia Secretary of Labor- A Labor Secretary who had long opposed labor laws and the Labor Department protection of workers. A perfect Trump pick. 539-Alex Azar Sec of Health and Human Services. The ex-Big Pharma lawyer was at the helm of America’s health agency when 400,000 Americans died from Corona virus while he was serving (Another 600,000 would die in the coming months) So much for Operation Warp Speed 540- Ben Carson Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. Here is what Trump said about him ““Ben Carson is a very low energy person, actually, I think Ben Carson is even lower energy than Jeb [Bush], if you want to know the truth. We need strong energy.” In 2016. This is what Carson said in defending Trump in 2023. “Well, let’s put it this way. Al Capone, who was a notorious killer, had one indictment, and Donald Trump has four indictments. That would tell you something right there.” Carson’s quote explaining why the DOJ is out to get Trump. Is still supporting Trump. This guy grew up in federal housing and took advantage of every affirmative action program to get through med school and then opposed those same programs for others. Bought a $31,000 dollar table while serving and then blamed his wife. 542- Rick Perry Dept of Energy. This guy, who had a C average in college took over the job from a Nobel Prize winning physicist. Wanted to get rid of the Dept of Energy (When he could remember it). Pro-coal, anti-climate science. 543- Robert Wilkie Dept of Veteran’s Affairs- The six largest veterans groups called for him to be fired for his mishandling of an investigating of a sexual assault 544- David Shulkin- Dept of Veteran Affairs “Shulkin lambasts the Trump administration for a toxic culture in which political ideology threatened the quality of veteran care. He describes a culture of vindictiveness, shadow policy and personal attacks that he fears will deter others from joining public service.” He was fired. 545- Elaine Chow- Dept of Transportation (Mitch McConnell’s wife)- Trump’s quote –“ "China-loving wife, Coco Chow.". So, she serves Trump for four years and this is the result. 546- John Kelley Chief of Staff/ Dept of Homeland Security- “What can I add that has not already been said?” Kelly said, calling Trump a “person that thinks those who defend their country in uniform, or are shot down or seriously wounded in combat, or spend years being tortured as POWs are all ‘suckers’ because ‘there is nothing in it for them.” 547- William Barr- Attorney General – “As the indictment says, they are not attacking his First Amendment right. He can say whatever he wants, he can even lie. He can even tell people that the election was stolen when he knew better,” Barr said. “But that does not protect you from entering into a conspiracy.” He added: “At first I wasn’t sure, but I have come to believe he knew well he had lost the election.” He believes Trump knew he lost and knew there was no fraud 548- Alex Acosta – Sec of Labor- He resigned over the Jeffrey Epstein plea deal while he was a federal prosecutor in Florida 549- Kirstjen Nielsen- Dept of Homeland Security- Fired by Trump for not being a bigger racist on border policies (As if family separation policies were not enough) 550- Jeff Sessions Attorney General- Trump allegedly said” he should get credit for nominating "the first mentally r------- attorney general in history," Not sure who is the biggest loser in that quote. Being from Alabama, Sessions has said little since leaving office and losing in the Alabama US Senate race. 551- Ryan Zinke- Sec of the Interior- Wilderness Society Website. This guy is so bad, he gets 14 reasons. Carving up Bears Ears and other national monument lands If Zinke's time at the Department of the Interior is remembered for any single action, it will likely be his recommendation that President Trump drastically cut both Bears Ears National Monument and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah. When Trump acted on it, using proclamations that were likely illegal (we're challenging him in court), he executed the single largest rollback of land protections in American history. Shortly after, Zinke recommended reduced protections for national monument lands in Oregon and Nevada, along with potentially damaging management changes in Maine, New Mexico and the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. 552 Paving the way to drill America's last truly wild place. As a prelude to Congress' passage of a White House-blessed tax bill that invites oil and gas drilling in the sensitive coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Zinke pushed for seismic testing to determine whether there was oil in that landscape--one of the last great, intact wild ecosystems on the planet. It left no doubt that the Trump administration and other anti-conservation lawmakers were working together to undermine the crown jewel of our National Wildlife Refuge System in the name of dangerous oil and gas development. 553 Weakening protection for sage-grouse. In 2015, federal agencies teamed with local and state interests to craft a plan that protected western sagebrush habitat, a rugged but fragile home to some 350 wildlife species (notably the greater sage-grouse, an iconic American bird whose population has been cut in half over the last 40 years, and whose health is considered a key indicator of the health of the entire ecosystem). That plan was the product of nearly a decade of work by interests ranging from ranchers to state wildlife agencies, but it took Zinke only a few months to effectively dismantle it, yet again privileging the short-term needs of oil, gas and mining companies who want more land open for development. As explained by Nada Culver, senior director of agency policy and planning at The Wilderness Society, Zinke's move is "a sideways attempt to abandon habitat protection for unfettered oil and gas development[.]" 554 Pushing dirty coal mining on public lands and nationwide Among President Obama's biggest energy achievements was declaring a moratorium on new coal mining on public lands, a move that decreased production of climate change-driving fossil fuels and protected lands and waters. Zinke reversed the moratorium within a month of taking office as part of the Trump administration's effort to unravel Obama-era advances on environmental protection. Interior also short-circuited an overdue review of the nation’s federal coal program, preserving an outdated system that lets coal companies buy up leases for well below market value without giving taxpayers a fair share for the resources they own. 555 Encouraging ocean drilling off the Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific coasts A decision released early in 2018 would allow offshore drilling for oil and gas in virtually all of America’s coastal waters, including the Arctic, Atlantic and Pacific oceans, as well as allowing oil companies access to new offshore leases off California for the first time in decades. This move poses a grave threat to thousands of miles of sensitive shorelines that are home to indigenous communities, marine mammals, shorebirds and fishing and tourism-dependent businesses (imagine another Deepwater Horizon oil spill, this time off the coast of Seattle or Los Angeles). Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke’s plan puts energy first on billions of acres of federal waters by erasing a safer five-year program that was developed under the Obama administration to prohibit new leasing in the Arctic and sensitive areas of the Atlantic, eastern Gulf of Mexico and Pacific. 556 Reversing rules that limit methane pollution One lowlight of the Zinke Interior Department's campaign to reverse environmental protections was the Bureau of Land Management's proposal to gut a rule that protects communities from methane pollution created by oil and gas drilling on public lands. The original “methane rule” would reduce methane emissions from drilling projects by 35%, addressing what is considered a "blind spot" in U.S. efforts to tally and curb greenhouse gas emissions. Now, the Bureau of Land Management wants to eliminate several protection and safety requirements, making it easier for oil and gas companies to waste our natural resources and pollute our air. 557 Jacking up national park entrance fees Under Zinke, Interior wants to raise entrance fees at 17 national parks, even as the Trump administration continues to starve public land agencies. The fee increases would take about 173 years to address the national parks' deferred maintenance backlog, a stated reason for the change, but will inarguably rob some families of the opportunity to visit. Not long after that news, the administration also decided to eliminate six of the fee-free days it offers for all national parks. So much for Zinke's confirmation-hearing platitudes about motivating more Americans to experience the outdoors. 558 Making the California desert an unbalanced energy development zone Under Zinke, the Department of the Interior is trying to allow more development, mining, grazing and off-road vehicle use on huge swaths of land in the California desert by gutting a rule called the Desert Renewable Energy Conservation Plan. That plan, based on eight years of scientific analysis, protected the most sensitive areas--including habitat for animals like desert tortoise and bighorn sheep--while helping to expedite responsible clean energy projects in others. Revising it is just another move that throws careful research and balanced planning out the window in the name of boundless development. 559 Toxic mining next to America's most popular wilderness area? At the end of 2017, in classic 'news dump' fashion, Zinke's Interior Department quietly issued a decision encouraging mining next to Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, which has been called the most-visited wilderness area in America. The project they are moving forward could end up discharging sulfuric acid, sulfates and heavy metals (some of which are highly toxic) into water, harming fish and wildlife—and possibly even contaminate lakes and rivers within the wilderness area itself. A few weeks later, Interior announced they would do a less thorough study than previously planned on how that mining would affect the Boundary Waters. It's one of the worst examples of Zinke and co fast-tracking activity that could irreparably harm a truly indispensable American landscape. 560 Precedent-shifting move to force a road through Alaska wilderness The vast majority of Alaska's Izembek National Wildlife Refuge has been designated as a federal wilderness area for decades, meaning it is an unusually pristine piece of land protected from development and other damaging activity. That didn't stop Zinke's Interior Department from executing a "land swap" with a private company that is considered the first step to building a road through the refuge. The move could endanger numerous migratory birds, brown bears and caribou while threatening to close off access to sportsmen. Further, it could serve as a model for future challenges to federal wilderness protection, America's highest standard of public land conservation for over 50 years. 561 Cozying up to the "land takeover" fringe Zinke was once an outspoken critic of the "public land takeover" movement, which seeks to take national public lands out of the protective care of agencies like the National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service so that they can be taken over by state governments—potentially leading to these places being sold off to oil, mining and logging companies. But soon after being sworn in, he attended a prominent pro-land takeover group's annual meeting. Shortly thereafter, the Interior department tacitly supported land sell-offs by offering positive testimony for a bill that would push to sell off 6,000 acres of public land in Arizona. If his first year is any indication, Zinke will grow closer still to the proponents of land seizure—and they will keep on inching from the fringes to the mainstream of American politics, with dire consequences for the institution of public lands. 562 An assault on transparency In February 2018, two senior U.S. Geological Survey officials resigned after they said Zinke pressured them to violate the office's scientific integrity policy by sharing data before it was released to the public. But this was only the latest in a long line of episodes in which Zinke shirked transparency or tried to cut the American people out of decision-making. Not long before the staffers quit, media reported the Bureau of Land Management was trying to introduce obstacles to filing Freedom of Information Act requests, one of several steps taken to reduce public input. And in the highest profile example, Zinke recommended the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante cuts without ever explaining how he made his decision (it must not have involved consideration of the public comments he solicited, which ended up decisively opposed to his monument review). 563 Agency roiled by staff upheaval and palace intrigue Zinke has taken a variety of actions to "re-organize" or "streamline" the Department of the Interior that have actually served to sow confusion and undermine its core conservation purpose. Among these are an attempt to reshuffle and relocate the agency's offices, which has drawn criticism from a bipartisan group of governors, and re-assigning or demoting staffers who don't back Zinke's agenda. Zinke has also failed to fill key agency positions, leaving the National Park Service and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service without directors, and declined to meet with Interior's long-running National Park Advisory Board—he was purportedly reevaluating whether the group was necessary--prompting 10 of 12 members to resign in frustration. More recently, many members of the dozens of public lands advisory boards that work with Interior complained that they are being shut out of key management discussions since Zinke took over. Beyond staffing chaos, Zinke seems to be installing a bizarre culture that values loyalty to him and Trump over the agency's mission (how many people do you know who fly a personal flag when they're in the office for the day?). 564 Toeing the Trump climate denial line In addition to troubling cultural and staffing shifts mentioned above, Zinke's Interior Department has evidently suppressed climate scientists who won't toe the Trump administration line; omitted climate change from its strategic planning documents; erased climate change material from agency handbooks; and even cracked down on staff trying to talk about climate change (the secretary himself reportedly chewed out a Joshua Tree National Park employee for tweeting about the subject). Zinke once broadly acknowledged climate change was a real problem, but that appears to be ancient history. And of course, he is now a US Representative from Montana 565- Scott Pruitt- Environmental Protection Agency- A climate skeptic, who made his reputation as Oklahoma Attorney General who sued the EPA on a regular basis in order to protect corporate interest, ended up resigning over ethics violations 566- Andrew Heeler- EPA Former coal lobbyist. His list is so bad for one year on the job, he gets added press. https://blog.ucsusa.org/elliott-negin/andrew-wheeler-decimated-epa/ Sidelined scientists Wheeler, a former coal industry lobbyist, has taken a number of steps to systematically reduce the role of scientists in the agency’s policymaking process. Last fall, for example, he eliminated the agency’s Office of the Science Advisor, which counseled the EPA administrator on research supporting health and environmental standards, and placed the head of the EPA’s Office of Children’s Health Protection on administrative leave. He also disbanded a 20-member scientific advisory committee on particulate matter, or soot; failed to convene a similar panel on ozone; and packed a seven-member advisory committee on air quality standards with industry-friendly participants. 567. Proposed to restrict the use of scientific data Claiming his intent is to increase “transparency,” Wheeler is promoting a rule Pruitt proposed that would dramatically limit the scientific studies the agency considers when developing health standards. If adopted, the rule would restrict the use of scientific studies in EPA decisions if the underlying data are not public and reproducible, which would disqualify many epidemiological and other health studies the EPA relies on to set science-based public safeguards 568. Gutted the coal ash rule The first major rule Wheeler signed as acting administrator refuted his claim that he could fulfill President Trump’s directive to “clean up the air, clean up the water, and provide regulatory relief” at the same time. By rolling back the Obama-era coal ash rule, Wheeler provided regulatory relief to his old friend the coal industry by weakening environmental protections established in 2015 to clean up coal ash ponds, which are laced with toxic contaminants that leak into groundwater. 569. Recommended unsafe levels of drinking water contaminants Poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which are used in firefighting foam and a variety of nonstick, cleaning, packaging and other household products, have been linked to thyroid disease and kidney, liver, pancreatic and testicular cancer. According to a recent study by the Environmental Working Group and Northeastern University, these chemicals threaten the drinking water supplies of an estimated 19 million Americans. A 2018 Union of Concerned Scientists report, meanwhile, found that PFAS water contamination at 130 military bases across the country exceed the 11-parts-per-trillion safety threshold determined by the Department of Health and Human Services Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. Nearly two-thirds of the sites had contamination that was more than 100 times higher than the safe level. 570. Rolled back Clean Water Act protections Clearing up a decade-long dispute over the scope of the Clean Water Act, the Obama EPA adopted a broad, science-based definition of the law that included protecting intermittent and ephemeral streams and wetlands that do not have surface water connections to other waterways. A 2015 EPA meta-analysis of more than 1,200 peer-reviewed studies concluded that even infrequently flowing small streams and isolated wetlands can affect “the integrity of downstream waters.” Trash them and that pollution could wind up in rivers, lakes, reservoirs and estuaries. In fact, Wheeler and Ross were well aware of the damage their new definition would do. At least 18 percent of streams and 51 percent of wetlands across the country would not be covered under their proposed definition, according to an internal 2017 slideshow prepared by the EPA and the Army Corps of Engineers and obtained by E&E News under the Freedom of Information Act. 571. Suppressed an inconvenient formaldehyde report Last August, Wheeler disingenuously told a Senate committee that the EPA was holding up the release of a report on the risk of cancer from formaldehyde to confirm its veracity. “I am sure we will release it,” he said, “but I need to make sure that the science in the report is still accurate.” In fact, the report—which concluded that formaldehyde can cause leukemia and nose and throat cancer—was completed by EPA scientists a year before Wheeler testified, according to a Senate investigation, and their conclusion was hardly a surprise. The EPA’s review process normally takes 60 to 90 days. The formaldehyde report has been in limbo for at least a year and a half, a blatant giveaway to the American Chemistry Council, the US chemical industry’s premier trade association, which has blocked tighter restrictions on formaldehyde for decades. 572. Ignored EPA scientists’ advice to ban asbestos Instead of heeding the advice of agency scientists and lawyers to follow the example of 55 other countries and ban asbestos completely, the EPA announced in April that it would tighten restrictions on asbestos—not ban it—despite overwhelming scientific evidence of its dangers. Manufacturers will be able to continue to use the substance if they obtain EPA approval. One of the deadliest known carcinogens, asbestos kills nearly 40,000 Americans annually, mainly from lung cancer. 573. Weakened the mercury emissions rule In late December, the EPA proposed to significantly weaken a rule restricting mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants by recalculating its costs and benefits. The Obama EPA, which issued the rule in 2011, estimated it would cost utilities $7.4 billion to $9.6 billion annually to install pollution controls and lead to $37 billion to $90 billion in health benefits by reducing not only mercury, a potent neurotoxin, but also sulfur dioxide and soot, thus preventing 130,000 asthma attacks, 4,700 heart attacks, and as many as 11,000 premature deaths. 574. Slammed vehicle emission rules into reverse Last August, the EPA and the Transportation Department issued a proposal to freeze vehicle tailpipe pollution and fuel efficiency standards, rolling back a 2012 Obama-era rule requiring automakers to boost passenger vehicle fuel economy to a fleetwide average of 54 miles per gallon by 2025. In a Wall Street Journal opinion piece titled “Make Cars Great Again” published a few days before the two agencies announced their proposal, Wheeler and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao charged that the Obama-era standards—the first to limit vehicle carbon emissions—are too burdensome for automakers and “raised the cost and decreased the supply of newer, safer vehicles.” 575. Rescinded the Clean Power Plan Perhaps Wheeler’s most damaging move to date came late last month when he signed a final rule to repeal and replace the Obama-era Clean Power Plan, which would have required coal-fired power plants to dramatically cut their carbon emissions. Yet another gift to the coal industry, Wheeler’s so-called Affordable Clean Energy rule grants states the authority to determine emissions standards but sets no targets, leaving them the option to do absolutely nothing. Before Wheeler released the final rule, an April study in the journal Environmental Research Letters found that his draft version would boost carbon emissions in 18 states and the District of Columbia and increase sulfur dioxide emissions in 19 states. The EPA’s own analysis of the draft rule, meanwhile, found that the proposal could have led to as many as 1,400 premature deaths annually by 2030 due to an increase in soot, and as many as 15,000 cases of upper respiratory problems. 576- Dan Brouillette Department of Energy- A former Ford Motor Company lobbyist and a climate skeptic. https://www.invw.org/tag/dan-brouillette/ “Documents obtained by InvestigateWest identify at least 46 reports from almost every program within the U.S. Energy Department’s energy efficiency and renewables office and seven national labs that have been stalled, downgraded or spiked. They include: 577 A study of hydropower’s future value and up to five more studies commissioned by the Energy Department’s hydropower office from four national labs, including Pacific Northwest, Idaho, and Argonne National Labs. 578 At least two dozen reports from the Energy Department’s solar program, of which at least 10 have been trapped in review since 2019. Among those stuck in review is a pair of National Renewable Energy Lab studies on grid integration of solar power in the western U.S., which is sitting with Energy Department Deputy Assistant Secretary David Solan since his appointment 17 months ago. 579 As many as 16 reports managed by the efficiency and renewables office’s strategic priorities and impact analysis team. They include a congressionally mandated study, requested in 2017, exploring the impact of a national “zero-emissions energy credit” scheme incentivizing renewable energy, nuclear power, and CO2 capture by coal- and gas-fired generators. 580 At least a dozen reports from an Energy Department grid modernization initiative, including an exploration of renewable energy options for large utility customers written by experts at the utility Xcel Energy, Walmart, and the World Resources Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank. 581 Potentially more than 10 reports from the DOE’s wind, transportation, advanced manufacturing and biofuels offices. One report, which was shunted to a science journal, estimated that Energy Department R&D on wind energy has created $31.4 billion in economic and societal benefits, delivering an 18-to-1 return on public investment; the journal it ran in charges nearly $8,000 for an annual print subscription.” 582-Tom Price- Health and Human Services- Shortest servicing HHS director in US history, Price resigned after racking up over $400,000 in travel expenses in using private jets for travel. Below is a list of environmental regulations that were attacked, destroyed, or altered by the Trump administration. It's amazing the damage that can be done in only four years (We know the list is long, sorry!). Our plan over the next four years is to speak out and reinstate lost environmental protections under new leadership. We hope over the past four years we have been able to bring the environmental attacks that were not covered by mainstream media to your attention. We plan to do this again over the next four years. We want to ensure our representatives keep their promises! We must hold all our politicians' feet to the fire! Our environment cannot handle another four year attack like this now or a decade from now. Our movement started at Badlands National Parks and we hope to protect our environment and wildlife for present and future generations to come.” List of Trump's attack on the environment over the past four years: - Air pollution and emissions Completed 856-Weakened Obama-era fuel economy and greenhouse gas standards for passenger cars and light trucks. 857. Revoked California’s ability to set stricter tailpipe emissions standards than the federal government. 858. Withdrew the legal justification for an Obama-era rule that limited mercury emissions from coal power plants. 859. Replaced the Obama-era Clean Power Plan, which would have set strict limits on carbon emissions from coal- and gas-fired power plants, with a new version that would let states set their own rules. 860. Formally withdrew the United States from the Paris climate agreement, an international plan to avert catastrophic climate change adopted by nearly 200 counties. 861 . Canceled a requirement for oil and gas companies to report methane emissions. 862 . Revised and partially repealed an Obama-era rule limiting methane emissions on public lands, including intentional venting and flaring from drilling operations. A federal court struck down the revision in July 2020, calling the Trump administration's reasoning “wholly inadequate” and mandating enforcement of the original rule. However, the Obama-era rule was later partially struck down in a separate court case, during which the Trump administration declined to defend it. 863 . Eliminated Obama-era methane emissions standards for oil and gas facilities and narrowed standards limiting the release of other polluting chemicals known as "volatile organic compounds" to only certain facilities. 864. Withdrew a Clinton-era rule designed to limit toxic emissions from major industrial polluters, and later proposed codifying the looser standards. 865 . Revised a program designed to safeguard communities from increases in pollution from new power plants to make it easier for facilities to avoid emissions regulations. 866 . Amended rules that govern how refineries monitor pollution in surrounding communities. 867. Overturned Obama-era guidance meant to reduce emissions during power plant start-ups, shutdowns, and malfunctions. As part of the process, the E.P.A. also reversed a requirement that Texas follow emissions rules during certain malfunction events. 868. Weakened an Obama-era rule meant to reduce air pollution in national parks and wilderness areas. 869. Weakened oversight of some state plans for reducing air pollution in national parks. 870 Relaxed air pollution regulations for a handful of plants that burn waste coal for electricity. 871 Repealed rules meant to reduce leaking and venting of powerful greenhouse gases known as hydrofluorocarbons from large refrigeration and air conditioning systems. 872 Directed agencies to stop using an Obama-era calculation of the social cost of carbon, which rule makers used to estimate the long-term economic benefits of reducing carbon dioxide emissions. 873. Released new guidance that allows upwind states to contribute more ozone pollution to downwind states than during the Obama-era. (The E.P.A. under Mr. Trump has also rejected petitions from a handful of states over failure to address upwind states' pollution.) 874 Withdrew guidance directing federal agencies to include greenhouse gas emissions in environmental reviews. But several district courts have ruled that emissions must be included in such reviews. 875 Revoked an Obama executive order that set a goal of cutting the federal government’s greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent over 10 years. 876 Repealed a requirement that state and regional authorities track tailpipe emissions from vehicles on federal highways. 877 Lifted a summertime ban on the use of E15, a gasoline blend made of 15 percent ethanol. (Burning gasoline with a higher concentration of ethanol in hot conditions increases smog.) 878 Changed rules to allow states and the E.P.A. to take longer to develop and approve plans aimed at cutting methane emissions from existing landfills. 879 Withdrew a proposed rule aimed at reducing pollutants, including air pollution, at sewage treatment plants. 880- Threw out most of a proposed policy that would have tightened pollution standards for offshore oil and gas operations and required them to use improved pollution controls. 881 Amended Obama-era emissions standards for clay ceramics manufacturers. 882 Relaxed some Obama-era requirements for companies to monitor and repair leaks at oil and gas facilities, including exempting certain low-production wells – a significant source of methane emissions – from the requirements altogether. (Other leak regulations were eliminated.) In progress 883 Proposed revisions to standards for carbon dioxide emissions from new, modified and reconstructed coal power plants, eliminating Obama-era restrictions that, in effect, required them to capture and store carbon dioxide emissions. 884 Proposed a rule limiting the ability of individuals and communities to challenge E.P.A.-issued pollution permits before a panel of agency judges. - Drilling and extraction Completed 885 Made significant cuts to the borders of two national monuments in Utah and recommended border and resource-management changes to several more. 886 Lifted an Obama-era freeze on new coal leases on public lands. In April 2019, a judge ruled that the Interior Department could not begin selling new leases without completing an environmental review. In February 2020, the agency published an assessment that concluded restarting federal coal leasing would have little environmental impact. 887 Finalized a plan to open up part of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska for oil and gas development, a move that overturns six decades of protections for the largest remaining stretch of wilderness in the United States. 888 Lifted a Clinton-era ban on logging and road construction in Tongass National Forest, Alaska, one of the largest intact temperate rain forests in the world. (The Clinton-era rule applied to much of the national forest system.) 889 Approved construction of the Dakota Access pipeline, less than a mile from the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. The Obama administration had halted the project, with the Army Corps of Engineers saying it would explore alternative routes. In 2020, a federal court reversed the Trump administration’s decision to allow the pipeline to run along its current path, but it has been allowed to continue operating. 890 Rescinded water pollution regulations for fracking on federal and Indian lands. 891 Scrapped a proposed rule that required mines to prove they could pay to clean up future pollution. The administration later decided not to issue financial requirements for several other industries, including petroleum and coal products manufacturing and the electrical power industry. 892 Withdrew a requirement that Gulf oil rig owners prove they can cover the costs of removing rigs once they stop producing. 893 Moved the permitting process for certain projects that cross international borders, such as oil pipelines, to the office of the president from the State Department, exempting them from environmental review. 894 Changed how the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission considers the indirect effects of greenhouse gas emissions in environmental reviews of pipelines. 895 Revoked an Obama-era executive order designed to preserve ocean, coastal and Great Lakes waters in favor of a policy focused on energy production and economic growth. 896 Loosened offshore drilling safety regulations implemented by the Obama after following the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion and oil spill, including reduced testing requirements for blowout prevention systems. In progress 898 Proposed opening most of America’s coastal waters to offshore oil and gas drilling, but delayed the plan after a federal judge in 2019 ruled that reversing a ban on drilling in the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans was unlawful. Ahead of the 2020 election, Mr. Trump announced he would exempt from drilling coastal areas around Florida, a crucial battleground state, Georgia and South Carolina. 899 Proposed weakening a rule that increased royalty payments for oil and gas leases on public lands, bringing them in line with market value. The Obama-era policy updated a 1980s rule that critics said allowed companies to underpay the federal government. An earlier attempt by the Trump administration to reverse the Obama rule was struck down in court, but a separate court ruling exempted the coal industry from the updated pricing policy. 900 Proposed easing the approval process for oil and gas drilling in national forests by curbing the power of the Forest Service to review and approve leases, among other changes. 901 Withdrew proposed restrictions on mining in Bristol Bay, Alaska, despite concerns over environmental impacts on salmon habitat, including a prominent fishery. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has so far denied a permit for a proposed project, known as the Pebble Mine, noting it “could have substantial environmental impacts,” but left the door open for a revised plan. 902 Proposed revising regulations on offshore oil and gas exploration by floating vessels in the Arctic that were developed after a 2013 accident. The Interior Department previously said it was “considering full rescission or revision of this rule.” 903 Proposed opening more land for drilling in the Alaska National Petroleum Reserve, a vast swath of public land on the Arctic Ocean. The Obama administration had designated about half of the reserve as a conservation area. 904 Approved the Keystone XL pipeline rejected by President Barack Obama, but a federal judge blocked the project from going forward without an adequate environmental review process. The Supreme Court in July 2020 upheld that ruling, further delaying construction of the pipeline. 905 Approved the use of seismic air guns for gas and oil exploration in the Atlantic Ocean. The Obama administration had denied permits for such surveys, which can kill marine life and disrupt fisheries. However, the Trump administration's permits to allow seismic surveys expired following a protracted lawsuit, ending the possibility of seismic air gun surveys in the Atlantic in the near term. Companies would need to restart the months-long permitting process. - Infrastructure and planning Completed 906 Weakened the National Environmental Policy Act, one of the country's most significant environmental laws, in order to expedite the approval of public infrastructure projects, such as roads, pipelines and telecommunications networks. The new rules shorten the time frame for completing environmental studies, limit the types of projects subject to review, and no longer require federal agencies to account for a project's cumulative effects on the environment, such as climate change. 907 Revoked Obama-era flood standards for federal infrastructure projects that required the government to account for sea level rise and other climate change effects. 908 Relaxed the environmental review process for federal infrastructure projects. 909 Overturned an Obama-era guidance that ended U.S. government financing for new coal plants overseas except in rare circumstances. 910 Revoked a directive for federal agencies to minimize impacts on water, wildlife, land and other natural resources when approving development projects. 911 Revoked an Obama executive order promoting climate resilience in the northern Bering Sea region of Alaska, which withdrew local waters from oil and gas leasing and established a tribal advisory council to consult on local environmental issues. 912 Reversed an update to the Bureau of Land Management’s public land-use planning process. 913 Withdrew an Obama-era order to consider climate change in the management of natural resources in national parks. 914 Restricted most Interior Department environmental studies to one year in length and a maximum of 150 pages, citing a need to reduce paperwork. 915 Withdrew a number of Obama-era Interior Department climate change and conservation policies that the agency said could “burden the development or utilization of domestically produced energy resources.” 916 Eliminated the use of an Obama-era planning system designed to minimize harm from oil and gas activity on sensitive landscapes, such as national parks. 917 Withdrew Obama-era policies designed to maintain or, ideally, improve natural resources affected by federal projects. In progress 918. Proposed plans to speed up the environmental review process for Forest Service projects. - Animals Completed 919. Changed the way the Endangered Species Act is applied, making it more difficult to protect wildlife from long-term threats posed by climate change. 920 Ended the automatic application of full protections for 'threatened' plants and animals, the classification one step below 'endangered' in the Endangered Species Act. 921 Relaxed environmental protections for salmon and smelt in California’s Central Valley in order to free up water for farmers. 922 Overturned a ban on the use of lead ammunition and fishing tackle on federal lands. 923 Overturned a ban on the hunting of predators in Alaskan wildlife refuges. 924. Reversed an Obama-era rule that barred using bait, such as grease-soaked doughnuts, to lure and kill grizzly bears, among other sport hunting practices that many people consider extreme, on some public lands in Alaska. 925 Amended fishing regulations to loosen restrictions on the harvest of a number of species. 926. Removed restrictions on commercial fishing in a protected marine preserve southeast of Cape Cod that is home to rare corals and a number of endangered sea animals. The Trump administration has suggested changing the management or size of two other marine protected areas in the Pacific Ocean. 927 Proposed revising limits on the number of endangered marine mammals and sea turtles that can be unintentionally killed or injured with sword-fishing nets on the West Coast. (The Obama-era rules were initially withdrawn by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, but were later finalized following a court order. The agency has said it plans to revise the limits.) 928 Loosened fishing restrictions intended to reduce bycatch of Atlantic Bluefin Tuna. Nonprofits have filed a lawsuit challenging the rollback. 929 Overturned a ban on using parts of migratory birds in handicrafts made by Alaskan Natives. In progress 930. Proposed weakening critical habitat protections under the Endangered Species Act by making it easier to exclude certain areas, including for public-works projects, such as schools and hospitals, and for public lands leased to non-government businesses. 75. Opened nine million acres of Western land to oil and gas drilling by weakening habitat protections for the sage grouse, an imperiled bird. The Idaho District Court temporarily blocked the measure. The Montana District Court also invalidated the directive, nullifying 440 oil and gas leases, but the ruling is on hold pending appeal. - Water pollution Completed 931 Scaled back pollution protections for certain tributaries and wetlands that were regulated under the Clean Water Act by the Obama administration. (A federal judge in Colorado halted implementation of the rule within the state, but it is in effect elsewhere.) 932. Revoked a rule that prevented coal companies from dumping mining debris into local streams. 933. Weakened a rule that aimed to limit toxic discharge from power plants into public waterways. 934 Weakened a portion of the Clean Water Act to make it easier for federal agencies to issue permits for federal projects over state objections if the projects don't meet local water quality standards, including for pipelines and other fossil fuel facilities. 935 Extended the lifespan of unlined holding ponds for coal ash waste from power plants, which can spill their contents because they lack a protective underlay. 936 Allowed certain unlined coal ash holding areas to continue operating, though they were previously deemed unsafe. 937 Withdrew a proposed rule requiring groundwater protections for certain uranium mines.
