[1] ['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.'] Date: 2024-03-07 Sometimes, winning the public debate requires more than just words. Sometimes, you have to play out the ramifications of different plans much more clearly. We need to scare the crazy out of the Trump supporters. We need them to wake up, already. No matter how the November election goes, Joseph Biden is the President now, and will still be the President from Election Day (November 5) through Inauguration Day (January 20). If Biden were to lose the election in November, we all know that he would peacefully and honorably respect the voting results and allow an orderly transition to the raging lunatic Trump. But….. What if he didn’t? What if he actually claimed to buy in to Trump’s proclaimed views on Presidential powers and immunity? What if tonight, in the State of the Union Address, he were to lay out a broad new approach he would take if he loses? What if he simply endorses every ridiculous claim to power that Trump and his ludicrously complicit toadies in Congress and State Houses have already endorsed? He could announce that, as POTUS, he can do whatever he wants with the election results, declare the election results invalid, deploy the Army to enforce any of his wishes about how much longer he remains President, jail anyone who disagrees, pardon himself and all others who help him while he is still President, the whole crazy nine yards that Trump proclaims as 100% valid. What if he just forcefully lays out this plan now? Completely in line with what Trump and his Fox and Red State flunkies are now saying is completely within the POTUS powers. And, what if he really sells it as a viable, and even responsible and, dare we say heroic, course of action? For howerver long he maintains this position, the GOP viewers and the Magaheads, and the Christian Right and the Supreme Court Toadies will be: 1: Horrified by the very concept of a Democrat seizing power like this 2: Actually alarmed that he might do it (depending on how valid they think it is for Trump) 3. Completely powerless to make counterarguments without gutting their own support of Trump 4. At least a little bit more likely to see the idiocy of the Trump position In some very dramatic and very understandable fashion, Biden has to highlight exactly how anti-democratic Trump definitely is. How cravenly selfish and how truly demented. I believe it is the only way to get the cult of MAGA and the mistaken Christianity of Christian Nationalists to understand just how truly evil and disasterous Trump is. It is going to take one heck of a rhetorical effort to shake the those two groups out of their stupor and recognize just how wrong-headed Trump’s positions are. Perhaps a third party (small “p”) would be a better leader of this effort. The President might not be able to stoop to such a level. Maybe one or two Democrat-adjacent splinter groups could take on this task and devote themselves to pushing the Biden-forever craziness and grab media attention to publicize it. But one way or another, we need a very loud, very clear, and very convincing demonstration of the disaster that will happen under Trump. And of the “what if everyone could do this?” argument. Creating dictators, even if you are starting with the best human ever as the dictator, is never never never the right answer.
