Many live in the capital city of London or around the universities of Oxford or Cambridge but there are also a semipermanent colony of Americans associated with the Air Force bases that have been here since the Friendly Invasion 80 years ago. No where else is this more apparent than in the tranquil countryside of the East of England. The biggest landscape and cultural impact on the East of England since the Norman Conquest, 900 years earlier. That was The Friendly Invasion, when the Mighty Eighth Air Force became Masters of the Air over Europe to help end the tyranny of Nazism. www.visiteastofengland.com/… At the height of the Second World War, Norfolk was the setting for a ‘Friendly Invasion’ which transformed the rural landscape and left a lasting legacy. The invaders were thousands of young Americans, part of the United States Army Air Force’s vast contribution to the Allies’ strategic bombing offensive being waged against Nazi-occupied Europe – the longest battle of the war. By 1944, Norfolk echoed to the roar of B24 Liberators and B17 Flying Fortresses as huge aerial armadas took to the skies from a countryside so freckled with bomber bases that it became known as ‘Little America’. www.visitnorfolk.co.uk/... Even today, the American footprint is still felt in this corner of the world.
